There was a lot said when Netflix chose to significantly downsize their originally massive deal with the Sussexes to a first look deal. Now, we’re hearing that even that first look deal might be dangling on the edge. Here’s everything we know about the developing situation.
What We Know About Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s Plans To Adapt A Bestselling Romance Book For Netflix
Let’s go back to three or so years ago, when Harry and Meghan’s relationship with Netflix hadn’t washed down to what it is today.
At the time, the couple giddily announced that their production company, Archewell Productions, will be adapting Carley Fortune’s hit book ‘Meet Me at the Lake’ for Netflix. The streaming giant had paid $3 million to acquire rights to the book.
At the time of the announcement, even Carley Fortune took to her socials to share the good news with her fans.
However, three years later, it’s still crickets, without a director and cast attached to the project.
“Three years in development for a movie like this at Netflix isn’t good,” a Hollywood source tattled to Page Six.
The novel sold 37,000 copies in its first week, quickly gathering a sizable fanbase right off the bat. In a way, the story resonates with Harry and Meghan’s as the book’s couple also met in their 30s.
The project was the first announced that should clearly lead Harry and Meghan away from their tell-all documentaries and royal-bashing projects.
The book’s themes revolve around postnatal depression, mental health and childhood trauma relating to the death of a parent.
The book’s official description reads, “A random connection sends two strangers on a daylong adventure where they make a promise one keeps and the other breaks, with life-changing effects, in this breathtaking novel from the New York Times bestselling author of Every Summer After.”
What Other Projects Does Prince Harry and Meghan Markle Have In Development With Netflix
Despite the freeze on ‘Meet Me At the Lake,’ Harry and Meghan announced last September that they plan to adapt a Netflix version of Jasmine Guillory’s 2018 novel, ‘The Wedding Date.’
In addition to this, Harry and Meghan proposed to film a Girl Scout documentary for the streamer. Even though it was shown at Sundance Film Festival, the new documentary ‘Cookie Queen’ is yet to be snatched up by a streamer or a distributor, after Netflix passed on it.
