The investigation into the disappearance of Nancy Guthrie got some true crime followers rather heated this weekend as an article took the suspect discussion back in a circle relating to close family members. Read on for more details.

New Speculation

At the moment, social media followers take a look once again at Annie Guthrie and her husband, Tommaso Cioni. Old footage of Cioni was discussed on Instagram vby OK Magazine.

In their post that pointed at an artice, the OP wrote:

Old videos of Nancy Guthrie’s son-in-law are fueling speculation that he was involved in the 84-year-old disappearance.

Of course, that made lots of people weigh in on it with lots of comments about his potential connection to the case.

Resurfaced Videos

In the article, the outlet talked about the old clips between May of 2023 and August 2024 that surfaced on X. They showed Nancy Guthrie’s son-in-law during his time as a teacher at Basis Oro Valley School.

In the videos, he performed everyday tasks like exercising and making pasta. Actually, while they showed a relatable side to the brother-in-law of Savannah Guthrie, they seem to backfire now.

Why is that? Well, apparently true crime armchair sleuths think they see similarities to the suspect in the disappearance of Nancy. But notably, many people feel very angry about it.

That’s because some folks opined that his demeanor seemed as “unapproachable” or “creepy.” Naturally, the last thing that Savannah, Annie, and presumably, Tommaso, need is this sort of thing as they deal with the loss of their mom.

The Online Speculation

Speculation focuses on the physical comparisons between Cioni and the masked intruder seen on Nancy Guthrie’s doorbell camera. Some folks claimed his build, eyelashes, and eyes matched the figure in the video.

Meanwhile, others noted that he appears to be left-handed, which they believe the suspect shown in FBI-released footage was.

Cioni Was Cleared

It should be noted that investigators denied any involvement by the family circle. In fact, Sheriff Chris Nanos made that clear by mid-February. That came after Ashleigh Banfield suggested that inside sources told her Tommaso was the main suspect in the case.

As far as the cops were concerned, the family, including Annie Guthrie and Tommaso Cioni, were “100 percent cooperative” from the start. Most outlets reported on that, including Men’s Journal and OK Magazine.

Evidence used to clear the couple included digital data and alibis that detectives found credible and consistent. Furthermore, investigators believed that Cioni’s physical profile didn’t match the person captured on the security cameras.

Additional reports even suggested that the couple passed polygraph tests, which helped investigators rule them out within the first few days of the search.

Other Speculation

More recently, suspicion among true crime followers rose again because Investigative reporter Brian Entin raised the subject of Annie Guthrie’s car. In mid-March, he wondered why the investigators hadn’t yet returned it back to the family.

In fact, the impounding of a car was described by investigators as standard investigative steps rather than proof of guilt.

Impact On The Guthrie Family

The continued focus on Tommaso makes some folks feel angry because they can only imagine the pain of losing a mom and not knowing how or why.

Some folks who live in the Tucson area accused the outlet of spreading misinformation. One of them said in the comments, “I live 5 minutes from Nancy’s and never heard a word about them being involved, other than the lies being spread!”

Waiting for Official Answers

For now, the case remains open with no arrests. The FBI task force hasn’t named any official suspects. While the internet dissects old teaching videos, formal investigation remains focused on finding Nancy and identifying the person seen on the doorbell camera.

While lots of armchair sleuths claim Tommaso is an obvious suspect, lots of people don’t buy into that, and perhaps for now, that’s the wisest way to run with rumors. After all, the pain for Savannah and her family must still feel very raw.

Here are a few more responses in the post’s comments:

  • I already read the police cleared them soooo maybe don’t just put random sh*t out that hasn’t been officially said . People easily buy into anything they see without reading 😒 I’ll wait until the cops say it.
  • Oh please. This family was not involved! Still praying.
  • Eventually the truth will come out.
  • I find it hard to believe this case hasn’t been solved yet.”
