As the case of Nancy Guthrie heads towards 60 days since her disappearance, new talk turns to questions about what investigators found inside her home. Unusually, it seems that very little explains what actually happened. Read on for more details.
A Different Angle
Of course, true crime followers heard all about DNA and camera footage for a while, but that didn’t help establish a subject or a motive. This weekend, Ashleigh Banfield talked about a slightly different aspect on her Drop Dead Serious podcast.
Interestingly, there wasn’t any evidence that pointed to a struggle or any forensic trail in the bedroom or living areas. So, Ashleigh pulled in Fil Waters, a retired Houston Police Department homicide detective.

Actually, well qualified, Fil “worked more than 400 homicide cases.” So, that means followers heard more about what “the apparent lack of evidence could mean.”
A Clean Scene
Notably, as most followers of the Nancy Guthrie case know, blood was found just inside the front door, and on the porch. However, internally, it seems no physical violence happened. At least according to what investigators can tell.
As Fil Waters pointed out, such a clean scene also tells a story. He noted that a “lack of evidence” often speaks as loudly “as a mountain of clues.” Most likely, it at least narrows down timeline and the possible methods used to remove Nancy from the property.
He Said, She Said
Followers closely watch for more details and new facts. However, there’s no clear story arising other than the blood at the threshold suggesting an injury happened there.
Other news revealed that possibly, Nancy Guthrie’s back door wasn’t actually locked. However, Fil noted that Savannah Guthrie mentioned it. But importantly, she wasn’t there, so perhaps she got the information from her sister Annie, and things can change with the retelling.
Not A Pre-Planned Kidnapping?
Notably, Fil felt that if the door was open, easy access didn’t point to a preplanned kidnapping. Instead, perhaps the intruder panicked. That could explain why, if anything bad inadvertently happened to Nancy, the “crook” just got her out the front door as fast as possible.
Once again, the duo discussed the lack of evidence inside, and the first sign of violence being at a potential exit route. Of course, if Nancy was disturbed during the intrusion, she might have resisted being dragged away.
Perhaps she saw the intruder, or even recognized him. That could have ended up with the need to get rid of a witness.
Hopes Fade
In any event, it seems that hopes for finding Nancy alive fade now. Certainly, as the ransom notes to TMZ came to nothing, it could actually mean the abduction wasn’t ever about a ransom motive. Rather, it could have been diversionary from what really happened.
Notably, as Ashleigh said, without the blood and the camera, it seemed that Nancy Guthrie “got up and walked out on her own and disappeared.” And that seemed possible given that initally, the Sheriff’s office treated it like that.
Speculation & Sources
As Fil noted, it seems like there’s a lot of speculation. He doesn’t believe sources until he sees the evidence that backs up claims. Plus, he reminded folks that the public doesn’t know at all what the FBI actually found inside.
So, what true crime followers know about what was or wasn’t found inside, could simply be conjecture. Additionally, while he isn’t a massive supporter of Sheriff Chris Nanos, he thought he handled thing correctly when he clammed up on dishing too much information.
Viewers React
While the podcast offered nothing of much interest in solving the crime, people still follow every bit of news. One person wrote, “I can’t help but to feel that the perp isn’t a stranger to Nancy.”
Here are a few similar responses from the discussion:
- I truly believe that law enforcement is closing in on the person. Not all information about a case will be disclosed to the public. Behind the scene DNA and evidence has been collected and is being processed. They may already know who it is.
- this gentleman knows what’s up. It’s so obvious that it isn’t a stranger. Law enforcement knows it.
- This was ABSOLUTELY NOT A BURGLAR GONE WRONG. Only a FOOL WOULD BELIEVE THAT STORY.
- I recall the Golden State Killer left open multiple windows and doors in the back as options for a quick egress if he needed to bolt. This could be a reason there were several propped open at Nancy’s.
