Lee Gilley allegedly killed his pregnant wife, Christa Bauer Gilley but right now, he’s not in custody because he fled to Italy. The fact that he had that opportunity makes true crime folks angry. Read on to find out more.
Entin Reports On The Story
During Tuesday’s Brian Entin Investigates podcast, Brian seemed very upset because reportedly, Christa was nine weeks into a pregnancy.
Another thing that made Entin pretty disgusted is that the escape seemed so well planned and very deliberately carried out.
If you don’t know, Lee Gilley worked as a Texas software consultant. Meanwhile, Christa Bauer Gilley worked as a physiotherapist. But allegedly, he cheated on his wife and had an “affair with a woman in California.”
The Backstory
According to an earlier report by People:
On Oct. 7, 2024, her husband, Lee Gilley, a software consultant, called 911 and told dispatchers his wife had overdosed on drugs and killed herself at the family’s home in Houston’s upscale Heights neighborhood.
Unfortunately, EMTs couldn’t save her. Later, after a pathologist ruled that Christa died from strangulation, Lee ended up arrested but never made it to trial.
Getting Out On Bond
According to files reviewed by Entin, Gilley lived a “double life” long before he severed his ankle monitor. While out on his $1 Million bond, Gilley spent months actively organizing his exit strategy.
As Entin noted, getting out on bail was time used to get fake documents which included a passport. However, he was picked up in Milan despite traveling under another name.
On May 11, he appeared before Italian officials and wanted a stay in extradition, claiming he’d face the death penalty in the USA.
A Criminologst Weighs In
Brian brought in criminologist Casey Jordan to discuss the case further. Brian said to her, “I guess I still can’t wrap my mind around him getting out of jail on bond. I mean, you’re accused of killing your wife and unborn baby. I would have assumed that would be a no bond. You’re behind bars until trial.”
Well, Casey explained how his getaway didn’t seem flawless. But some states do have bail, and she noted that a $1 million bond usually only needs 10 percent of that. So, it wasn’t an impossible amount to find.
How Did The Italians Notice Him?
Next, they moved on to talk about the escape. How did the Italians get suspicious? Well, the duo discussed that he got a “Belgian passport.” So, that seemed like a bit of a mistake.
Casey noted that turning up on a Belgian passport, if officials talk in the language of the passport, it wouldn’t take long for red flags to arrive with an American accent.
A Similar Case
Next up, Entin mentioned the true crime case involving Scott Peterson. Actually, the parallel between Lee Gilley and Peterson seems like a good analogy. In both cases, the accused men were young and successful. Plus, both of them were accused of killing a pregnant wife.
Peterson ended up fleeing but was arrested near the Mexican border. Like Lee, he was well prepared for flight because he had survival gear, cash, and his brother’s identification.
Fleeing Is An Admission Of Guilt?
Of course, fleeing only makes the prosecution believe that the suspect basically admitted guilt by trying to evade justice stateside. Of course, the huge level of preparation won’t look good if they get him extradited back to the USA to stand trial.
The trial, if it ever happens, should be an interesting one because the pathologists claimed Christa Bauer Gilley died of strangulation. However, Lee Gilley’s defense claimed she died from a rare blood disorder called “methemoglobinemia.”
Bond System Gets Roasted
The most infuriating aspect for true crime fans following the story seems to be the failure of the Harris County bond system. Not to mention the nightmare for Christa’s family.
Entin described it for them as a “shocking decision to release Gilley on bond” in the first place.
Facing a capital murder charge for the death of his wife and unborn child, Gilley was still deemed eligible for release. Now, there’s a lot of scrambling going on to try and get him back.
Viewers React
In the comments section, one angry person opined, “Judge that ALLOWED ANY BOND Needs HELD ACCOUNTABLE AS WELL.”
Here are a few more responses from the discussion:
- In my opinion if you kill someone there should never be an option for a bond.
- What’s the point of an ankle monitor if anyone can cut it off?
- What is wrong with just leaving or divorce, such evil people.
- If he was afraid of the death penalty perhaps he shouldn’t have murdered his wife and unborn child.
