Joseph Duggar is no longer behind bars in Arkansas—but his legal troubles are far from resolved.
After spending just over a week in custody, Duggar was released from a Washington County detention facility on Friday, March 27.
The Washington County Sheriff’s Office tells PEOPLE that Joseph is no longer in their custody as of Friday, March 27.
His release comes nine days after he was initially booked on felony charges tied to an alleged incident dating back to 2020.
While his departure from the Arkansas facility marks a significant development, it has also created new uncertainty.
Authorities have yet to confirm where Duggar is currently being held—or if he has already been transferred out of state.
Awaiting Extradition—and Questions Still Unanswered
Before his release, Duggar had been detained while awaiting extradition to Florida. There, he is expected to face serious charges filed by the Bay County Sheriff’s Office.
Joseph was being held at the facility awaiting extradition to Florida after being charged with two counts of lewd and lascivious behavior by the Bay County Sheriff’s Office on March 18.
However, the situation remains unclear. Duggar’s name has not yet appeared in Florida booking records, and officials have declined to confirm whether he has arrived in their custody.
He is not yet listed as being in the custody of the BCSO. Charges have not yet been formally filed by prosecutors in that county and the agency declined to comment when asked by PEOPLE if Joseph had been extradited to their facility in Florida following his release from Arkansas.
One notable step in the process came earlier—The reality star waived his right to an extradition hearing one week prior to his release on March 20.
Allegations From a 2020 Family Vacation
At the center of the case are disturbing allegations involving a minor.
Joseph is accused of sexually abusing a 9-year-old girl several times during a 2020 family vacation to Panama City Beach.
According to an affidavit filed by a Bay County deputy, Duggar allegedly admitted to the acts on two separate occasions—first in a direct conversation with the girl’s father, and later during a phone call that included both the father and a detective.
A deputy sheriff with the BCSO wrote in an affidavit for an arrest warrant that Joseph allegedly confessed to sexually abusing the girl on two occasions — first to her father on March 17 and then the following day on a phone call with the father and a detective with the Tontitown Police Department (TPD).
Investigators also conducted a forensic interview with the alleged victim, who has since provided further details.
That detective also conducted a forensic interview with the girl, now 14, during which she accused Joseph of sexually assaulting her as they sat on a couch in their beach rental while hiding his actions with a blanket, according to the affidavit.
Duggar is expected to face formal charges in Florida once legal proceedings move forward.
Joseph is expected to be charged with lewd and lascivious behavior with a minor under the age of 12 and lewd and lascivious behavior committed by an individual over the age of 18 when he is arraigned in Florida.
Separate Charges Involving Duggar and His Wife
Complicating matters further are additional charges unrelated to the Florida case.
Authorities in Arkansas launched a separate investigation that resulted in charges against both Duggar and his wife, Kendra Duggar.
In addition to those felony charges in Florida, Joseph and his wife Kendra Duggar as also facing unrelated charges stemming from a search of their home by the TPD and agents from the Arkansas Dept. of Human Services on March 19.
Joseph and Kendra have both been charged with four misdemeanor counts of false imprisonment as well as four misdemeanor counts of endangering the welfare of a child.
Kendra Duggar has since been released on bail, while both are expected to return to court soon.
Kendra is out on bail following those charges, and both her and Joseph are scheduled to appear in an Arkansas courtroom on April 29.
From Reality TV Fame to Legal Crisis
Duggar, now 31, first gained public attention as part of one of reality television’s most recognizable families.
He appeared across multiple iterations of his family’s TLC shows, beginning as a teenager. Joseph, who appeared on all four iterations of his family’s TLC reality series franchise beginning when he was just 13, is a father of four who has been married to his wife Kendra since 2017.
Their relationship was also featured on television. His wedding to Kendra was featured in a 2017 episode of Counting On, at which time she joined the cast of the reality show.
The Duggar family’s television run came to an abrupt end in 2021.
TLC cancelled Counting On in 2021 after a federal jury convicted Joseph’s older brother Josh Duggar, 38, of receiving and possessing material depicting minors engaged in sexually explicit conduct.
Josh was sentenced to just over 12 years in prison and is now serving out his time at a low-security facility in Texas.
What Happens Next?
Although Duggar is no longer in Arkansas custody, the legal process is still unfolding—and key details remain unresolved.
With Florida authorities yet to confirm his status or formally file charges, questions continue to surround his whereabouts and the timeline for his next court appearance.
For now, the case remains active on multiple fronts, with proceedings expected to continue both in Arkansas and Florida in the weeks ahead.
