Throughout his career, York has been involved in various television shows over the years, including a role in the short-lived horror series, Werewolf.
However, for countless fans, he is most recognized for his iconic role on GH; York made his debut on the soap in 1991, stepping into the shoes of Mac Scorpio and originating the character.
Over the decades, he has also reprised this role on Port Charles and All My Children.
Recently, York celebrated an impressive 35 years on the soap-in an interview with TV Weekly, he reflected on how his personal experiences began to shape his character in Port Charles.

York Noted His Personality Traits Evolved Over Time, And Paid Tribute To Tristan Rogers
“As time passed, my human personality traits began to emerge on screen, signaling the start of a gradual change; Mac isn’t merely a villain; he’s truly a good guy!”
He made his dramatic entrance into the town on a ship, literally tossed into the waters of San Pedro, California, by his brother, Robert Scorpio, played by the late Tristan Rogers.
In reality, York held deep admiration for his co-star; reflecting on their shared moments, York remarked, “Tristan was a true icon in daytime television; he had a fantastic sense of humor and welcomed me warmly.
He took me under his wing, and we spent countless hours in the dressing rooms, analyzing our scenes together-he was always there for me, bursting with spontaneity. Tristan had a unique spark, and I am incredibly thankful he was part of my journey.”
Over The Years, Mac Has Been A Variety Of Storylines
Over the years, Mac has been involved in a variety of storylines; he took on roles such as a police chief, a father figure, and even experienced love.
York particularly reflected on his character’s romance with Felicia Scorpio (Kristina Wagner), stating, “I was humbled by that. I recognized the many fans of Frisco and Felicia. They still exist, but Mac and Felicia share a profound connection.”
The outlet highlighted that Mac frequently spent time at the hospital that shares the show’s name. In reality, York faced a health scare in 2023, taking a break from the show to address myelodysplastic syndrome and smoldering multiple myeloma.
John Gave A Positive Health Update
Fortunately, York provided fans with a positive health update, saying, “I’m doing very well. It’s more about maintenance now. I was visiting the hospital daily for six months, but now it’s every four months.”
Despite the challenges, York expressed immense gratitude for the support from fans and his General Hospital family.
He remarked, “There were moments I was alone in the hospital, praying. My colleagues, including Frank Valentini, GH’s executive producer, Kristina, Jon Lindstrom (Kevin Collins and Ryan Chamberlain), and others reached out, sending videos, support, and love. GH is my second home; I cherish it- I’m incredibly thankful to be part of this legendary show; here’s to another 35 years!”
