Clayton Echard and Laura Owens remain in a legal battle that crossed over into the world of true crime. Fans of the ABC franchise remember Clayton as the lead on The Bachelor, season 26. Unforgettably, fans probably also remember the messy “Rose Ceremony from Hell” in Iceland. Read on to find out what’s happening with Laura who claimed he made her pregnant.

The Reality TV Origin

On the reality TV franchise, in which Laura never appeared, Clayton’s hunt for love seemed like a bit of a roller coaster. However, after the show, his life became a nightmare when Owens accused him of fathering her twins following a single encounter.

From the beginning, the Bachelor star refuted the allegations that he fathered any baby, never mind twins. A paternity suit followed, and it was all over the tabloids. If you don’t know, it later became a criminal investigation.

The Case Takes a Turn

Initially heard via a family court, the case did a huge turnaround when a judge ruled the pregnancy claims by Clayton to be a “detailed hoax.” Not buying it, the legal eagle “found that Owens knowingly presented false claims.”

Notably, the court findings revealed that Owens allegedly used a “fabricated” pregnancy video and a forged ultrasound image to manipulate the proceedings.

According to a report by People, Clayton naturally felt stressed by the whole thing. The outlet cited him as saying

There were plenty of times where I felt like I just wanted to give up and not fight because it just was taking up so much of my energy to do so. But I just learned that sticking to it and really fighting for yourself, I mean, no one will fight for you like you will. So I really learned about just the power of standing for what you believe in and really being your own biggest advocate.

From Family Court To Criminal Charges

Unfortunately for Owens, the family court’s ruling opened the doors to a true crime investigation. In fact, it led to a list of felony indictmentsagainst Owens.

Actually, it seems like quite a complex case and another update claimed that she faces charges for “Taking the Identity of Another.” According to the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office, Owens allegedly stole the identities of medical professionals to create forged health records.

Apparently, investigators found evidence that she falsified documents that boosted her claims of pregnancy for nonexistent twins. By that, they meant she allegedly used names of real doctors. Of course, that gave her claims legitimacy.

More Victims and Legal Consequences

The added charge arrived not from Clayton Echard, but from someone else. Name withheld, that man fell victim to similar claims back in 2011. In fact, very much like Clayton Echard, he too went through almost the exact same stress after another “hoax.”

With criminal charges from the Bachelor case on her mind, other complications arrived for Laura Owens. Back in August 2024, the court ordered her to pay Clayton $149,219.76. The amount included his legal fees and other related court costs.

Judge Julie Mata found that Owens acted in “bad faith” and decided that her petition wasn’t grounded in fact or law. Despite losing her appeals, Owens has yet to pay the full amount and recently filed for bankruptcy.

The bankruptcy brought more interest in the case. Of course, that could impact the payback for Clayton’s legal costs. It’s not clear wether his legal team will get invoved in that.

Felony Charges

Per FOX 10 Phoenix, the charges include perjury, forgery, fraudulent schemes, and more. Actually the drama seems way worse than anything seen on the reality TV show. Certainly, it seems you can’t make this up.

With the trial for the true crime now set for July 29, 2026, Clayton Echard must rue the day he ever heard of Owens. Apparently, he works in real estate while it seems that Owens focuses on proclaiming her innocence to anyone who has ears to listen.
