Prince Harry And Meghan Markle Join Many Others In Opposing The Development of Superintelligent AI

Is the world we’ve seen and learned about in sci-fi movies and books nearly upon us? ChatGPT is leading a wave of AI apps and tools available to the public, and it’s only going to get better and grander.

Soon enough, AI-generated songs, pictures and stories won’t be all that we’ll be suffering from. We’ve even progressed to the extent that we now have an AI-generated actress to add to the talent pool.

As I’m writing this, AI generated videos that show the late Queen Elizabeth rapping and Princess Diana serving food in the street are making waves online.

So it’s really no wonder that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have decided to stand up against the development of superinteligent AI. What’s the bigger picture and where exactly do we go from here?

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex Support Movement To Halt the Development of Superintelligent AI

Prince Harry and Meghan joined famous names from around the world to call for bans and restrictions to be placed upon major tech companies, in the bid to stop them from creating superinteligent AI.

Using a 30-word statement, figures from around the world put forward the argument that it will be a huge detriment to humanity if tech companies manage to build something that matches or even surpasses humanity.

Their statement reads, “We call for a prohibition on the development of superintelligence, not lifted before there is broad scientific consensus that it will be done safely and controllably, and strong public buy-in.”

Companies at the forefront of AI revolution include Google, OpenAI and Meta Platforms, with numerous others from around the world joining the rat race.

For this reason, the signatories’ concerns were highlighted, and it ranged “from human economic obsolescence and disempowerment, losses of freedom, civil liberties, dignity and control, to national security risks and even potential human extinction.”

In addition to this, Harry, 41, included a personal note, which read, “The future of AI should serve humanity, not replace it. I believe the true test of progress will be not how fast we move, but how wisely we steer. There is no second chance.”

Signing the letter to oppose the creation of superinteligent AI is a step forward in Harry and Meghan’s continuing struggle to highlight the dangers of AI.
