Beyond The Gates spoilers indicate that there is definitely some tension going on in the marriage of congressman Martin Richardson (Brandon Claybon) and Bradley “Smitty” Smith (Mike Manning). Fans noted very quickly that there is very little romantic affection between the couple, and a great amount of tension and conflict between the two. Their conversations have been tense at best. Could it be that their marriage is not all it seems?

Beyond the façade of a picture-perfect gay couple, there lies more beneath the surface. Perhaps their marriage is for appearance sake, in an attempt to make Martin look good for his political career?

Martin Richardson Wants Bradley Smith To Play His Role

Martin and Smitty seem to argue quite often, and Martin was angry with Smitty for confiding in his mother, Dr. Nicole Richardson (Daphne Duplaix) after wanting to go back to becoming a journalist.

Martin told him that “this conversation is over” and that he needs to play the role that he agreed to play when they got married, i.e., the role of househusband and father to their children.

Martin does not want Smitty to follow his dreams because he knows that he is too good of a journalist and it is only a matter of time before he neglects the role of househusband to Martin.

Why would Martin want to prevent Smitty from pursuing his journalism career? The only reason would be that Martin is not only selfish, but he is afraid it would hurt his political career.

Martin Richardson Wants To Run For President

Martin told his mother, Nicole, that he wants to run for President of the United States, which thrilled her. Martin’s reputation is now more important than ever if his political aspirations are as such.

It would be very crucial for him to keep his marriage intact, and for Smitty to continue to play the role of househusband. Maybe Martin could have meant actually playing a role?

Perhaps their marriage is just for appearances, and to make Martin look favorable in his political career. He has the perfect husband, perfect children, and seemingly the perfect marriage but all of that is just for his image.

Do Smitty and Martin actually love each other? Maybe, maybe not. They probably do care about each other, but their marriage is probably only for the convenience of keeping Martin in good political standing.

There Is A Dark Secret About Martin Richardson

It has been mentioned that there is a deep dark secret regarding Martin that is being kept from not only Martin, but everyone.

This is what Bill Hamilton (Timon Kyle Durrett) used to threaten Vernon Dupree (Clifton Davis) and Anita Dupree (Tamara Tunie) in order to get the Dupree family to agree to come to his wedding.

Martin has been having recurring nightmares, and it is almost certain that it is related to this secret. What could this secret be?

Whatever it is, it will most surely threaten Martin’s political career and have an adverse effect on his potential presidential candidacy.
