King Charles’ Speech Reflects His Plans For A Slimmed Down Monarchy

King Charles' Speech Reflects His Plans For A Slimmed Down Monarchy

At 6 pm (UK time) on September 9, King Charles (wow, that’s going to take a little getting used to) addressed the nation. His speech has so far been praised for its directness and inspirational themes. He talked about his mother and father, (both of whom he referred to as mama and papa), in the warmest of ways.

While the message was of hope, there was a hint of sadness when he announced that he’ll have to hand over the charities dearest to his heart to others.

But the brow-raising part, for anyone who watched the poignant message, was when he talked about Harry and Meghan. The slight pause spoke volumes, and while we may feel at leisure to translate it anyhow we want, only Charles can truly tell us he felt at that moment.

Will King Charles Push For A Slimmed-down Monarchy?

For a long time, it’s been rumored that King Charles wants a slimmed down monarchy. A rumor which Harry and Meghan touched on during their bombshell Oprah interview back in March 2021. The Sussex couple claimed that there were schemes to take away titles rightfully belonging to their children, via a century-old letter’s patent. However, they claimed racism was the reason behind the motive.

At present, the new King hasn’t had the time to set whatever plans he has for the future of the monarchy into motion, but we can’t ignore the way he talked about his second son and daughter-in-law and their dreams to build a better life outside the UK.

After making his vows to Britain, its territories and the Commonwealth of Nations, he talked about relinquishing his Duchy of Cornwall, which he has managed for “over five decades”, to his son and heir, Prince William.

At that same moment, he announced to the world that the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are now officially the “Prince and Princess of Wales”, saying: “With Catherine beside him, our new Prince and Princess of Wales will, I know, continue to inspire and lead our national conversations, helping to bring the marginal to the centre ground where vital help can be given.”

Slightly touching on the Sussexes, he said: “I want also to express my love for Harry and Meghan as they continue to build their lives overseas.”
