The Young and the Restless Spoilers: Lane Flames Out – Cane Completely To Blame

Sometimes both parties are at fault when a relationship collapses on ‘The Young and the Restless’. But not in this instance. The apparent end of ‘Lane’ was completely caused by Cane (Daniel Goddard).

This scribe, like Lily (Christel Khalil), kept the Joe (Scott Elrod) indiscretion in mind. Yes, Cane deserved consideration because of how he forgave his wife.

Hope persisted that Cane might somehow bring himself to admit all that he’d done. But that feeling died when when he chose to push that laptop button and transfer $25,000 from the twin’s school account to sleazy Jesse (Max Adler).

Why, oh why, oh why did this one-time good guy allow himself to be dragged down to the gutter? Yes, this is a serious question. Every seasoned soap fan knows that now deposed co-executive producer and head writer Sally Sussman and her team purposely wrote Goddard’s character in a bad direction. That was one of their major gambles.

This storyline can arguably be analyzed as having reached a stalemate. Some elements of Cane’s devolution were believable. Juliet (Laur Allen) is very appealing and what happened with her has also been experienced around the world for ages.

But a weak plot point, which triggered Juliet’s lawsuit and Cane’s termination started with the Billy (Jason Thompson) bash. While both men had a soapy step-brother rivalry, Cane would have never knowingly sabotaged his own wife’s modeling comeback. That part should have been written differently.

Might someone in Cane’s position have met Jesse’s blackmail demand, rather than going to Michael Baldwin (Christian LeBlanc), Paul (Doug Davidson) or both? Maybe.

Okay. That’s where Cane was. Let’s see where he goes now.

Goddard could actually be working through an Emmy-nominated season. Because where his character goes from here is new territory and this actor has the chops to elicit redemption from the audience.

As for Cane, sorry buddy, your wife is done with you. And no one should blame her. Not now, or in retrospect.
