EastEnders Fans Heartbroken By Death Of Robbie Jackson’s Sidekick

EastEnders Fans Heartbroken At Death Of Robbie Jackson's SidekickFour-legged actors are a popular lot on BBC One’s super sudser “EastEnders,” and fans are mourning the loss of one of them, handsome pooch Wellard II. The loveable shaggy dog belonged to Robbie Jackson (Dean Gaffney) and his death was announced onscreen by Robbie’s sister Sonia (Natalie Cassidy).

Sonia broke the sad news about Wellard II during a hospital visit to Dot Cotton (June Brown). Of course, Dot herself has a loveable pet, one that viewers recently saw get up to some serious antics.

Viewers watched in dismay as Dot’s adorable black cat ran across her path as the beloved character was tending to a cake in her kitchen. Poor Dot lost her balance and fell, and for a while it looked quite grim for the grandma.

After Sonia told Dot, “Robbie lost Wellard II a while back,” loyal fans were quick to respond on social media.

One fan tweeted, “Oh no, Wellard II died as well,” and another responded, “It’s not right, Robbie being back on the Square without a dog. Bring on Wellard the Third.”

In fact, road sweeper Robbie and his dogs have been a popular pair on the soap. Wellard II was brought on after his namesake died in 2008.

The first Wellard was given a chocolate by Robbie’s sister Bianca Jackson, and it unfortunately resulted in his death. In 2015 Wellard II was brought on, and was an instant hit just like his predecessor.

When Wellard I debuted in 1994 fans instantly approved of his furry presence and they were quite vocal when his life was endangered in 2005. It seems that Wellard I gave Ian Beale a little chomp (on the rear no less!) and for a bit (no pun intended) it looked as if he might be euthanized.

The distinguished Wellard I was the show’s longest-playing animal and earned the best pet award at the 2008 Digital Spy Awards. Wellard II debuted on-screen in the fall of 2015, but he was not with Robbie when he returned to Albert Square in 2017. Bring on Wellard the Third!
