'Days Of Our Lives' News: Shakeup in Writer's Room – Josh Griffith Out – Ryan Quan Promoted

‘Days of Our Lives’ (DOOL) has had some pains recently with the cancelation rumors that had us all biting our nails wondering if we would lose the Salem-based drama. And now news has broken that there has been a major shakeup in the DOOL writer’s room.

Soap Opera Digest is reporting that Josh Griffith has left his position as co-head writer and Ryan Quan will take his place alongside Dena Higley who remain co-head writer. Griffith had been co-head writer with Higley for just a year but is a veteran soap scribe.

Griffith wrote for Santa Barbara, One Life to Live, Sunset Beach, As the World Turns, The Young and The Restless, and briefly on General Hospital. He later returned to The Young and The Restless to work with Jill Farren Phelps but resigned and landed at DOOL in February 2015.

Back during the Writers Guild of America strike in 2007-2008, Griffith was one of a small number of writers – including Higley and several other soap writers – who drew criticism and ire for continuing to work while the rest of the scribe union went on strike.

Griffith was reportedly brought in to Days of Our Lives to try and improve ratings when renewal of the 50 plus year old soap was in question. With the renewal now nailed down, perhaps Griffith felt like his mission at DOOL had been accomplished.

By comparison, Griffith’s co-head writer replacement Ryan Quan is practically a novice. Quan has been a writer’s assistant on DOOL since 2008 and was later promoted to writer on the soap and did some writing work on Passions as well.
