It looks like one of the longest running issues at hand in “The Young and the Restless”, will be tackled head on in the coming episodes.
It all started 25 years ago when Nikki Newman, played by Melody Thomas Scott, had a horseback riding accident. The accident left a mental scar with her that has resulted in her addiction to alcohol and painkillers. Now, 25 years later Nikki’s issues are getting ready to come full circle in what fans can expect will be an explosive intervention.
On May 19, Nikki will leave her husband Victor and and will get herself a room at the GCAC all while feeding her alcohol addiction by over enjoying her vodka.
Then, on May 23, Nikki will hit rock bottom and need the hell of her friends to bring her back.
On May 28, there will be a special stand alone episode of The Young and the Restless, in which Nikki’s family and friends will ban together and stage an intervention in an effort to get her the help she needs.
Melody Thomas Scott recently spoke with TV Insider about the situation and shared her thoughts.
When asked about the severity of Nikki’s issues, she said, “Because it’s shocking I can’t reveal what happens, but Nikki hits the skids in a way that neither fans or anyone in Genoa City has ever seen. It’s bad. It’s low.”
She goes on to say, “…This whole addiction thing started when she fell off a horse, but it was her torment over Ashley that kept her drinking. [Laughs] I’m blaming the whole damn thing on Ashley! “
So, does Melody think Nikki’s intervention will be successful? She hopes not! She says,
“I don’t know where [head writer] Chuck Pratt is taking this but, as a selfish actor, I do not want this intervention to be successful. I have too much fun playing her as a drunk. There is a lot of humor in Nikki’s sloppiness. And her drinking creates conflict. It’s a soap! The fans don’t want to see happiness. If Nikki sobers up and becomes June Cleaver, where is the drama in that?”
