General Hospital: An Open Letter to Michael Quartermaine – Please Forgive Your Father Sonny Corinthos

Dear Michael,

This is an appeal to you to please, please forgive your adoptive father Sonny Corinthos. We understand your frustration and recent emotional upheaval after the loss of your biological father AJ Quartermaine. However, we also want to remind you that Sonny had always operated with your best-interests at heart even if his actions were reprehensible, criminal or down-right shocking. There are some things you should consider as you pursue your current course of revenge against the man who raised you and, to this day, still loves you.

First, although Sonny and your mother Carly did keep you away from your biological dad AJ Quartermaine, you must remember that, at the time, AJ was a violent loose cannon who could not be trusted with something so precious as you as an infant. AJ had a reckless, self-destructive bent that he often turned outward to harm others including what would have been your first sibling. Do you recall that AJ knocked your mother down a flight of stairs at the Quartermaine mansion causing her to suffer a miscarriage of what would have been her first biological child with Sonny?

And yes, your life and Morgan’s life were often at risk. And you did take a bullet to the head for Sonny. But know this – if Sonny had known that bullet was coming, he would have gladly stepped in front of it to take it for you. You have to understand that Sonny was brutally abused as a child by his step-father and the idea that you might suffer any abuse at the hands of AJ – who was volatile and a drinker to boot – was intolerable to him. Sure, Sonny may go to extremes to protect his family, but that’s because no one really protected him as a child.

And now you’ve done the very worst to him – you took his daughter Avery Jerome Corinthos away from him and even went so far as to nickname her AJ. But be careful, now that you’re an adult, Sonny is more likely to see you as a man and rival than his son and that makes what’s happening between the two of you dangerous. You learned to be a man at Sonny’s knee and have become far more like him than you may even realize. You’re clever, ruthless and calculating – all things you’ve picked up from Sonny over the years. Like it or not, Sonny has made you the man you are.

Michael, you’ve lost one father and you don’t want to lose another. Sonny’s the only father you have left and you need to forgive him. If not for your sake, then for the sake of your brother Morgan and your little sister Avery. You have actually cast yourself in the role of Sonny in this situation – do you realize that? Sonny took you away from AJ to protect you from what he perceived to be a dangerous man. And now you have done the exact same thing. In this scenario, you are Sonny, Sonny is AJ and baby Avery is you.

This is a Greek tragedy of epic proportions brewing and these things never turn out well. Please, please Michael don’t let things go on this way. Bridge the gap between you and Sonny without burning that bridge. You need your family – all of them – both the Quartermaine and the Corinthos clans. Why not put an end to this and give little Avery back and be a brother to her rather than trying to be a father – which you’re obviously not ready for. You’re a busy young man – you’re running an empire after all. Wait until you settle down to be a father and, for now, let Sonny be the father to you and Avery that he wants to be.

Sincerely,

A General Hospital fan
