“Days of Our Lives” (DOOL): Mary Beth Evans Salutes 50 Years of DOOL and Shares Fond Memories of Kayla

"Days of Our Lives" (DOOL): Mary Beth Evans Salutes 50 Years of DOOL and Shares Fond Memories of Kayla“Days of Our Lives” hits its golden anniversary in just a couple of days and Mary Beth Evans recently shared her thoughts on the Days of Our Lives 50th Anniversary and her fondest memories of the soap. Evans is about to hit her own milestone on the show – she’ll be 30 years as Kayla Brady this March and has done so much amazing work on the show, most notably working alongside Stephen Nicolas – Steve “Patch” Johnson.

Here’s a look at some of Mary Beth Evans’ thoughts on this milestone and some of her favorite Patch and Kayla moments. Mary Beth called out how funny it was shooting the romantic “Lady in Red” dance scene. She said, “There isn’t really any music playing, and you’re trying to get the moves right and trying not to be too dorky.” If you look at the minute mark in the clip below, you’ll see her trying not to laugh when Stephen accidentally rammed her into the table in what was supposed to be a passionate move.

Mary Beth also talked about her on-set camaraderie with Stephen and how often the director would have to postpone shooting their scenes when they couldn’t stop loving at each other’s antics. She said, “He really is one of my best friends. We are so connected, and I really do believe that’s part of what makes Steve & Kayla so special.” Mary Beth also shared that working on Days has been a gift and she appreciates her co-workers saying, “We’ve known each other so long it truly is like working with family.”

She also mentioned the heartbreak of being fired back when she and Stephen got the ax in 1999 and said, “When you’re let go, it seems so terrible. You’re out in the cold and you don’t know what’s ahead. But, as I’ve shared with several of the younger cast members, all of those experiences have led me to the next thing. I always tell them, there are great things out there – great things are ahead.” Of course, in the world of soaps, things turn and Mary Beth was back at DOOL before too long.

Mary Beth also spoke about how poignant it was to read the Greg Meng retrospective coffee table book titled ‘Days of Our Lives – 50 Years’. She said, “As I flipped through the book, literally page by page, I was blown away. It was like looking through my own family album… it was an emotional walk down memory lane.” Mary Beth reminisced that she feels “such a sense of pride and honor to have been a part of this truly amazing show.”

Mary Beth also shared a link to one of her favorite fan-made videos devoted to Patch and Kayla that’s an encyclopedic video montage of the innumerable break-ups of the Days of Our Lives super couple. It’s definitely a must-watch.

Congratulations to Days of Our Lives on their upcoming 50th anniversary and to Mary Beth Evans for her amazing 30 years (off and on) as Kayla on DOOL. What was really nice is that Mary Beth said looking back at the 50 years of memories was special to her not only as an actor on the show but “as a fan of the show (and I am a fan).” We love Patch and Kayla and hope they’re in Salem – and reunited as a couple – for years to come.
