‘The Young and the Restless’ Spoilers: Travis is Cocky and Dishonorable – Can Character Be Fixed?

'The Young and the Restless' Spoilers: Travis is Cocky and Dishonorable – Can Character Be Fixed?Michael Roark is a good actor, but that’s not the point of this ‘The Young and the Restless’ piece. Instead, the issue of his character (Travis) is being directly addressed. Mr. Crawford’s hello was pleasant. But in recent months, he jumped the shark by becoming cocky and acting in dishonorable ways.

Sussman has the right credentials and this scribe’s respect. She’ll need time to put her own imprint on this show and thoughtful fans of the genre are prepared to give her that.

Thankfully, Sussman also has a vaunted colleague (Kay Alden, story consultant) who she trusts at her side. Both Y&R alums possess pedigrees earned through founder Bill Bell. So, they’ll either adjust Travis or write him out of Genoa City if they feel he doesn’t fit into long-term script plans.

Upon first blush, Travis was a blue collar guy who bought his own business (Hank’s Dive Bar). A later revelation showed that he was a Wall Street wonk. But that fact didn’t cause this character to become unlikable, instead it simply added flavor to his backstory.

Michelle’s (Kelly Frye) plane recently took off from New York and landed somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin, where Genoa City fictionally exists. The fleshed out version of Travis’ ex-flame also didn’t make this character unpalatable. No, that happened when Travis treated Victoria as though he a lesser incarnation of Billy (Jason Thompson).

The anti-Billy niche Travis filled felt right. Fans naturally expected him to face conflict at some point. But those hypothetical scenarios would have been better evidenced through a personal war against Victor (Eric Braeden), or an ongoing battle with Victoria’s most recent ex-husband.

Pushing this particular character off course inside Michelle’s Genoa City Athletic Club suite felt forced. Travis’ subsequent withholding of the truth from Vickie was something Billy would have (and has) done on many occasions. Savvy devotees know that derivatives of main characters aren’t nearly as interesting as the originals.

As ‘Tricky’s’ shaky nuptials approach next month it seems like Travis has no place to go but up, or out. However, a great writing staff knows how to project consistency through the screen. Yes, this problem can be solved if that’s the direction that’s chosen for Roark’s character.
