Y&R Spoilers: Victor Exploits Nick’s Addiction – Has His Need For Control Gone Too Far?

The Young and the Restless spoilers show that while Nick Newman (Joshua Morrow) is struggling with addiction, Victor Newman (Eric Braeden) is busy trying to control what the media says.

Meanwhile, Jack Abbott (Peter Bergman) has genuinely reached out to try to sponsor Nick. It seems so matter what storyline it is, Victor treats it as a business deal. The less empathy, the better.

The Pattern Never Actually Changes

We love Victor as much as the next person. But at a certain point, you need to take a step back and just say, “wow.” In every storyline, you’ll find that Victor is very much the same person.

That can be comforting, knowing that some things never change. But eventually, he’s going to act like a real person… right?

Every time someone he cares about is struggling, his first instinct isn’t comfort. It’s how can he control this so that his family continues to look like saints to the public. It happened with Nikki Newman’s (Melody Thomas Scott) own addiction for years.

Every time Adam Newman (Mark Grossman) makes a mistake or goes missing for a few years, Victor finds a way to control the narrative. And now with Nick’s struggles.

Is There Any Depth Here, Or Just Repetition?

Of course, many will just say that this is simply who Victor is. And a character that stays consistent over decades isn’t really a bad thing.

Typically, people don’t completely change who they are on a dime. It takes time. And we’ve seen moments of Victor loving Nikki or his family, but at the same time, it can feel forced.

The best version of this storyline will let Victor’s control cost him something. Something real. So he stays true to who he is, but loses Nick in the process.

Something that would make him realize how he acted and begin to change his ways to earn his son’s love back.

Of course, that is just a pipe dream. We all know that Victor will control the narrative, get his way, and nothing else will change.

It feels like I’m speaking blasphemy, condemning Victor Newman of all people. Maybe it’s because I began my soap journey within the last decade and have only heard and seen some moments from the early years, but Victor rubs me the wrong way.
