Multiple outlets reported that Tony Carruthers wasn’t executed on Thursday, but it wasn’t out of forgiveness. Rather, Governor Bill Lee granted a one-year stay of execution because officials botched the administration of the lethal injection.
Over An Hour On The Gurney
Per CBS News, Tennessee officials spent more than an hour trying to establish the IV access needed for the lethal injection. Reportedly, they managed a primary line but couldn’t establish the required backup line. Anyway, Carruthers lives a few more month for the murder of Delois Anderson, Marcellos Anderson, and Frederick Tucker.
Actually, while the appalling failures were carried out, it might help his defense in the long run. If you don’t know, they hope for new DNA evidence to help clear his name.
And in fact, he never confessed to the crime. Meanwhile, his co-accused, James Montgomery was released after a retrial in 2015.
Some Folks Cheered
When WKRN News 2 reported on the botched execution, some people in the comments section felt that he deserved the excruciating pain and rather awful-sounding procedure. But others seemed taken aback and a bit shocked.

For them, what made the case hit hard probably lies in the realization that what lies cloaked under sanitized language of “protocol” collides with the physical reality of what actually happens.
One person wrote, “Damn can you imagine laying down and about to be executed and then they say never mind. Holy moly. Now you have to go through it all over again on another day. Damn.”
Strapped Down & Facing Death
Actually, that reaction relates to the ability to imagine a man strapped down while officials repeatedly try to access veins for over an hour. For the same reason, that motivates many folks who oppose the use of lethal injections.
Even some of them who do support the death penalty might not deal with the nitty-gritty details of taking a life. Of course, it all ought to be a very sort of medical, safe place to end life in a precise and clinical way.
Unfortunately, that argument breaks down when things go wrong. And often, true crime fans on social media claim that a quick and clean firing squad might be more humane in the long run.
Not An Isolated Incident
Certainly, the case of Tony Carruthers isn’t an isolated incident stateside. In the past, other cases included Clayton Lockett and Doyle Lee Hamm. Witnesses claimed they suffered through prolonged efforts to find veins. Of course, that causes mental suffering.
Perhaps this isn’t the fault of the officials who administer the drugs, but rather the fact that people on death row seldom die quickly. In fact, decades can pass before convicted criminals face their judgment day.
Age Factors In
Factors related to medical fragility and ageing could make it difficult to get the death process right the first time, per Research Gate. And notably, it can’t be that easy to perform a flawless execution at any time. Talk about pressure at work!
The Tony Carruthers case likely triggers a lot of arguments about lethal injections because in the past, Tennessee already had controversies. Some of them involved pausing executions because of drug testing and protocol failures.
Firing Squad Options
Meanwhile, in Utah, firing squad is an option in some cases. That’s because while it sounds brutal, it’s less stressful on the inmate. Paradoxically, with the lethal injection death method, while it seems more humane, the fact that trained doctors tend to stay away from it raises red flags.
If it were that humane, then why would they stay away? And even the folks with the strongest stomachs might feel a bit disturbed when things go wrong. Another commenter said, “This is why we need the firing squad or hangings brought back!”
Another one penned, “Let’s Thank The Governor He Did A Wonderful Move By Stopping This Execution Because Of The Medical Personnel Mishap . The Team Repeatedly Failed To Locate A Suitable Vein And Access A Backup Line.”
