Timothy Hudson Ordered Into Custody Ahead Of Anna Kepner Murder Trial

A federal judge pulled the plug on 16-year-old Timothy Hudson’s pre-trial release.

He ordered the teen held in custody until his trial on charges of sexually assaulting and murdering his 18-year-old stepsister, Anna Kepner

Timothy Lived With A Relative

Hudson had lived with family under strict supervision while his case moved through the juvenile system.

And that fact really annoyed true crime followers. But the case took a major turn this week.

Prosecutors charged him as an adult in federal court. They booked him into the Citrus County Jail in Florida.

The Teen Was Jailed – Why?

Chris Stewart on the Law&Crime Network went over newly unsealed court documents. He laid out why the federal judge ended Hudson’s conditional release.

The defense said the kid followed all his juvenile release rules. The court wasn’t persuaded. The allegations were apparently too brutal.

The judge wrote that a defendant accused of “intentionally ending a life and committing sexual battery inside a tight space at sea” posed a risk “no curfew monitor or custodial placement can be trusted to contain.”

That was the judge’s bottom line.

The Backstory

Here’s the timeline. The case goes back to November of last year. Kepner and her family took a Caribbean vacation. They sailed on a Carnival cruise ship out of Miami.

When the FBI visited the ship, that got Brian Entin’s radar going. Later it turned out he was right, and it was a criminal case.

Crew members found the body of Anna Kepner on November 7. They entered stateroom 8343 to clean. They found Kepner’s body wrapped in a blanket.

It was shoved under a bed. Investigators said “it appeared that someone had tried to hide her.”

The FBI documents reviewed on the podcast laid out the cabin setup. As a reminder, Kepner shared the room with Hudson and their 13-year-old half-brother.

The Younger Brother

The night of the murder, the younger brother tried to get in and sleep. Hudson blocked the doorway. He shouted, “Wait, don’t come inside.”

Timothy Hudson said he was changing. The 13-year-old noticed the cabin lights were on. The bathroom doors were wide open.

Hudson let him in after a delay. Later, the younger sibling slept in the room. But he had no clue his sister’s body was under the bed frame.

Forensic Evidence

Now the forensic stuff. Former state attorney Dave Aronberg joined Chris and they broke down the prosecution’s case.

He said Hudson’s recorded movements showed a “consciousness of guilt.” How?

Well, security cameras caught him looking “left and right down the hallway appearing to check whether anyone was in the hallway.”

That was right before he left the room alone. More CCTV footage showed him dropping something into a trash receptacle on the ship.

Jesse Weber recently confirmed that on his Live for NewsNation.

Investigators later found Kepner’s smashed cell phone in there. Ship router data tracked the phone’s movement and backed up the sequence.

Behavioral Observations

Aronberg pointed out something else. He said Hudson acted cold the next morning.

Crew members crowded around the open cabin door. They were trying to figure out what happened to Kepner.

And, allegedly, Timothy Hudson walked right past. He “makes no effort to look and see what’s happening inside.”

He just looked straight ahead and walked away. Prosecutors say that behavior stood out. Most people would at least glance.

The DNA Also Tells A Story

The medical examiner confirmed a rape kit matched Hudson’s DNA. So, those who follow the case finally got some indication that their suspicions might have been right on the money.

Investigators said Kepner died from mechanical asphyxiation, allegedly caused by a chokehold or bar hold.

Remember, we reported on another step-sibling who mentioned that sort of thing went on, allegedly, in the home.

A Window For The Defense?

Aronberg said the defense might try to create reasonable doubt. That’s because they have a second DNA profile.

It belonged to a male minor from out of state. Kepner had consensual relations with him earlier in the cruise.

Aronberg suggested that prosecutors could flip that. They could argue it gives Hudson a motive.

Aronberg suggested Hudson may have had what he described as a “deep-seated attraction” to her.

Many people following the case won’t find that theory surprising.

Maybe he got enraged when he learned she had been with someone else.

For now, Hudson stays in federal custody. The trial is currently set to begin in September.
