Prince Harry is set to take what has been described as his final stand in his last ongoing case against British newspapers this month. However, days before he’s meant to travel back to the UK, reports have surfaced to claim that his legal team employed fraudulent measures to gather both their witnesses and their evidence. Here’s everything we know about the situation.
What Prince Harry’s Legal Team Has Said About the Fraud Allegations
On Monday, Jan. 19, the High Court battle against the Daily Mail publishers, which involves Prince Harry and several other public figures, will commence, with Harry expected to take the stand by Thursday.
Before any of this can happen, however, Harry’s legal representatives have been accused of dishonesty, fraud and conspiracy from Associated Newspapers, the publishers of Daily Mail.
The attorney representing the claimants nevertheless views these accusations seriously, claiming that their basis are “wholly objectionable.”
“The allegations are exceptionally serious: of fraud, dishonesty and professional misconduct,” David Sherborne, the attorney representing Harry and the other claimants, said in written submissions. “The pleading of fraud or deceit is a serious step, with significance and reputational ramifications going well beyond the claim.”
Alongside Prince Harry, the other claimants include Baroness Lawrence and Sir Elton John, with four other big names.
Together, these public figures are seeking damages over the belief that journalists working for the Daily Mail employed fraudulent measures to obtain information. Some of these measures include phone hacking and the illegal placement of listening devices.
If Harry and his fellow claimants are to win, not only would they be getting an apology from the Daily Mail publishers, but they would also be setting the British media giant back by a handful of millions.
In the bid to escape this pessimal reality, Associated Newspapers has pushed back with claims that a member of the claimants’ research team has “deliberately and fraudulently created a ‘misleading email chain.’” In addition to this, it is believed that some of their sworn witnesses were bribed.
How will these new accusations fare in court? Well, we can only wait and find out!
