Calls for Prince Harry to step down from Invictus Games have been happening on and off in recent years. After people deemed that Harry and Meghan’s divisive brand was not a healthy image for the veteran games, the call started going out to actually get the duo to step aside.
Prince Harry Would Benefit Invictus Games More By Stepping Aside, Expert Says
Invictus Games is coming to the UK in 2027, and already, Prince Harry is trying to draw in massive media attention by having his father King Charles in attendance.
However, Richard Edens doesn’t think the event is ready to exist alongside the
controversies surrounding Harry’s brand.
Weighing on the speculations already surrounding an event 11 months away, Eden commented, “Pressure is always put on the King and Queen. We saw this in the run-up to Harry and Meghan’s visit to Britain, didn’t we? We had three weeks of speculation, all about the security and whether they would bring the children. It all seems like public pressure and it’s really not the way the royal family has traditionally operated.”
As for the constant stream of so-called insiders giving their different takes on Harry’s personal reasons for honoring his father with a VIP-level Invictus Games invitation, Eden noted, “You would expect an invitation like this to go out behind the scenes, and that it all would be done in private. This kind of public pressure is awful really.”
He then went on to share his personal opinion on Harry’s involvement with the Games, saying, “Personally, I would like to see Harry step down from it, to distance himself from Invictus. It would get rid of that controversial element and the Games would prosper as a result.”
This is not the first time that Harry has faced calls for him to step back from the Veteran games. In July, a petition went up on Change.org to remove Harry from Invictus Games, which drew a considerable amount of signatures.
It’s also believed that Harry’s past with charities like Sentebale and African Parks make him unfit to stay at the helm of Invictus Games.
Harry is currently facing a lawsuit from Sentebale for misogynoir and defamation by the chair Dr Sophie Chandauka. In addition to this, Harry continues to be on the board of directors for African Parks, even after the nonprofit organization admitted to perpetuating human crimes against the indigenous Baka people.
