This month has seen Prince Harry and Meghan Markle constantly in the news rotation. The problem now is that many of these stories are negative ones.
The most damning, of course, remains Variety’s report that the Sussexes have completely fallen out with Netflix.
This news came right after Netflix dropped As Ever like a hot potato, despite only being partners of the lifestyle brand for less than a year.
Then of course, there’s the upcoming Australian trip and the embarrassing petition that has been raised against them. Over 30,000 signatures and counting. Ouch!
How is their brand faring, in the light of these negative stories that’s circulating in the news about them? One expert has thoughts.
Are Prince Harry and Meghan Markle Ever Going To Be Able To Fix Their Messy Brand?
The Oprah tell-all, Netflix’s ‘Harry and Meghan,’ ‘Spare’ and numerous other little projects targeting the Royal Family have served to paint Harry and Meghan’s brand as a highly divisive and controversial one.
Coupled with the fact that the duo have basically become punching bags for various comedians and television hosts, it’s clear the Sussex couple is not doing too good image-wise.
Brand and culture expert Nick Ede talked about the chaotic mess that is now Harry and Meghan’s brand during his chat with Daily Express. “This Variety piece really doesn’t come at a great time for Harry and Meghan, and I imagine behind the scenes, there will be a fair bit of frustration. Their Netflix deal was supposed to be the big success story of their post-royal life, so any suggestion that things aren’t running smoothly immediately raises eyebrows.”
He reasoned, “When everyone starts speaking out like this, it creates a sense that there’s smoke, and where there’s smoke, people assume there’s fire. Claims that they’re ‘difficult to work with’ are particularly damaging in Hollywood because reputation is everything.”
The recent Variety piece did not bode well for the Sussexes, who have suffered multiple damning reports about the toxic work environment they keep.
The Hollywood Reporter was particularly indepth in their report about Meghan Markle’s constant bullying of staff. If you add this to the fact that Harry and Meghan seem to be losing staff every now and then, you can readily guess just how little people think of their brand.
“Once that narrative takes hold, it can be very hard to shake, and it seems that this has become a perpetual problem for them both; that’s not going away,” Ede warned.
