Investigative journalist Brian Entin’s on a mission to clear up false rumors about the Nancy Guthrie case. Despite contrary reports, police don’t have a specific suspect right now. Read on for his take on it.
A Detective Weighs In
Recently, after CrimeCon 26, veteran homicide detective John Bueller chatted with Entin. During the introduction that Enitn posted on YouTube, he explained that he’s heard nothing to verify claims that there’s a suspect in the crosshairs.
And he talked about the many tips that haven’t yet been processed. He talked about police trawling though thousands of tips. And somewhere in there, might be buried an important clue.
You might have seen some posts or articles about the task force having a suspect. However, the duo dismissed those reports as false.
There is, apparently a mountain of tips, and many of them probably haven’t even been read yet. And because of such a large backlog, that doesn’t mean there’s no progress on the Nancy Guthrie case.
Why Unread Tips Matter
As an example, John Bueller shared a story from a past case. Back in the day, a killer mailed a hand-drawn map showing where a victim was. But because of so much mail, no one saw it for a very long time.
Maybe the same thing could happen with Nancy’s case. Naturally, the delays and lengthy amount of time in this case seem likely not to find her alive, despite many people still hoping for a miracle.
But perhaps some closure could arrive if a suspect finally faces justice.
How Lie Detectors Help
Plenty of speculation still leans into the immediate family. But notably, none of those stories seem true. The duo discussed how the investigation team used lie detector tests early on to rule out Nancy’s family.
While lie detector tests are not admissible in court, they do help police eliminate suspects. Apparently after the test, it also becomes a useful starting point to follow up on any signs of dishonesty.
Who Police Think Did It
The detective seemed to veer away from the theory of more than one abductor in the case. As for the motive, John Bueller leans into the theory of one person with a financial motive.
Notably, despite no arrests yet, it seems the perpetrator did make some mistakes.
For example, not many experts carry the gun the way the camera showed. Then, he didn’t seem to initially notice the door cam and quickly tried to cover it with a plant. And that seemed a bit panicky in the opinion of Bueller.
In fact, that potentially showed some poor planning, rather than the act of a professional criminal.
Some Unexplained Questions
As there’s a large reward for information about Nancy Guthrie, it seems odd that nobody clocked that and turned someone in.
Then the ransom notes didn’t go anywhere, either. Tie that in with blood drops at the scene, and no known enemies, it seems extremely perplexing.
One very worrying aspect is that it seems Nancy’s pacemaker stopped working soon after an intrusion. Naturally, that leads them to suspect that Nancy didn’t survive the initial ordeal.
If a kidnapper found himself with a deceased 84-year-old on his hands, he could have simply hidden her because the consequences to collecting a ransom or reward could be too risky.
