Nancy Guthrie: Nest Camera Video Released, Someone Detained?

Apart from new footage that captured an intruder at Nancy's home, someone was detained for questioning in the kidnapping case of Nancy Guthrie.

The search for missing 84-year-old, Nancy Guthrie took a step forward on February 10. The FBI released a video of someone prowling around her home in Catalina Foothills, Tucson, Arizona. Although a bit grainy, there’s a lot that authorities can take away from it. Read on for more details.

Footage Pulled From A Nest Camera

The video, pulled from a Nest Camera, only recently arrived as experts dug deep and found it during a complex data recovery process. Going public, FBI Director Kash Patel explained on X that the footage was “recovered from residual data located in backend systems.” He added:

Working with our partners – as of this morning, law enforcement has uncovered these previously inaccessible new images showing an armed individual appearing to have tampered with the camera at Nancy Guthrie’s front door the morning of her disappearance.

The Choice Of Clothing

On the surface of it, there’s simply a person prowling around in the porch area of Nancy Guthrie’s home in the early hours of February 1. And notably, he wasn’t dressed like some casual passerby.  Potentially, the person had a mustache and one commenter noted a possible tattoo on one wrist.

It seemed that the intruder was a male dressed in a dark sweatshirt, with a three-hole knitted balaclava. Notably, he seemed to suggest someone with an athletic build. But interestingly, the flashlight the person used was held in his mouth. Now that suggests he’s perhaps worked in the dark before, leaving his hands free.

Mixed Equipment

Interestingly, the clothing seems a combination of different types. For example, the large and clumsy gloves seem to be not very useful for fine work. Then, the backpack tells a story as well. While a backpack seems common, it certainly looks like it might have been purchased at a high-end retailer. So, it seems the person isn’t a broke drifter desperate for some cash.

Possibly, they earn enough money to pay about $200 or more for outdoor equipment. Perhaps they even have a home, a life, a family. Estimated between late 20s to 40s, that’s a possibility.

Awareness & Gait?

Other takeaways involve a rather disciplined walking gait. Some theorists suggest that perhaps there’s a tactical training background or a lot of experience moving around in potentially dangerous areas. Or at the very least, an awareness of someone used to the wilderness.

Next up, he demonstrated strength by reaching into a planter to rip out some prairie bush. Why? To obscure the camera lens. Hardy plants, he didn’t seem to struggle with that.

Not A Couch Potato

Overall, the video showed a person who doesn’t look like a couch potato or a white collar office worker. But, of course, that doesn’t rule anyone out; lots of people work in cities and go to the gym, and hike outdoors as often as they can.

Additionally, a weapon is evident, but not carried where one might expect a law enforcement officer to carry it. It seems centered rather than hip-slung for easy access. CBS News reported the subject was “wearing a face mask, gloves, backpack and what appears to be a gun holster.”

A Strong Person

Obviously, law enforcement focuses on the physical effort needed to access the home, confronting a mostly immobile woman and potentially carry her away from her door. At least some violent action occurred because Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos confirmed that “DNA tests showed blood on Nancy Guthrie’s front porch was a match to her.”

The video that arrived on the FBI website later made its way across social media. Naturally, it gave more details to the call for folks to contact authorities if they know anything. And, the $50K reward still stands.

A Big Breakthrough

A huge breakthrough might have come along, and it’s not clear whether it relates to information received about the video from Nancy Guthrie’s home. According to a major update on Wednesday, by outlets like ABC News and Fox 10 Phoenix, someone was detained for questioning.

It came after reports that SWAT vehicles mobilized south of Tucson. And, the person was detained at a traffic stop. So far, it’s not clear whether that person was identified as a suspect, or charged with any crime. However, FBI Director Kash Patel noted that the release of the video changed everything and also mentioned “persons of interest” in the case.

Annie & Her Husband

All of this follows a lot of scrutiny of the Guthrie family, particularly at the home of Annie Guthrie and her husband, Tommaso Cioni. Law enforcement spotted by journalists carried out what looked like evidence bags and they also checked out the septic tank.

However, a former FBI agent chatted with Brian Entin, and noted that the search didn’t need a warrant, and consent was given. So, perhaps that indicated they looked for evidence that someone associated with the home or Annie might have gathered information there. So, they could be looking at a third person Additionally, Sheriff Nanos seemed careful with his words about any suspects.

Savannah’s Appeal

Meanwhile, Savannah Guthrie, Nancy’s daughter who works for the Today show and has a history of crime investigation and reporting, also shared details from the video. She said that “Someone out there recognizes this person. We believe she is still alive. Bring her home.”

No update on the reward arrived, but certainly, the video suggests that perhaps the intruder leads a reasonably comfortable life given the costly outdoor brands.
