On Wednesday, March 18, authorities revealed that Joseph, 31, a former star of 19 Kids and Counting, had been charged with molesting a 9-year-old girl during a 2020 vacation in Panama City Beach, Florida.
The Duggar family’s dark history had already made headlines years earlier. In 2015, Joseph spoke out after Josh, now 38, was accused of sexually abusing five girls, including his own sisters, Jill Duggar Dillard and Jessa Duggar Seewald.
In a December 2015 promo for a TLC special, Jill & Jessa: Counting On, Joseph said, “Whenever somebody you respect the most is willing to get up and proclaim what we believe as Christians, about being true to your wife, you’d never think that that’s the person who’s involved in it.”
Reflecting on the revelations, he added, “It broke my heart,” admitting he was shocked that Josh “was living such a secret life.”
Josh Duggar’s Conviction and Family Fallout
At the time, Josh acknowledged the allegations, admitting he had “acted inexcusably” and “hurt others, including my family and close friends.” He described confessing to his parents, who “took several steps to help me address the situation,” and seeking counseling for himself and those affected. Josh also noted, “I understood that if I continued down this wrong road that I would end up ruining my life.”
The consequences of Josh’s actions became starkly clear years later. In December 2021, he was convicted on two counts of knowingly receiving and possessing child pornography and sentenced to more than 12 years in federal prison in May 2022.
According to the Department of Justice, in May 2019, Josh allegedly used the dark web and online file-sharing tools to repeatedly download child sexual abuse material. He is currently serving his sentence at the Federal Correctional Institution Seagoville in Texas.
Other Duggar family members also grappled with the fallout. John-David Duggar recalled in 2015, “I always wanted to be like him. But one of the toughest things I ever had to tell my older brother was, ‘I don’t want to be like you anymore.’”
Allegations Against Joseph and Legal Proceedings
Joseph’s own arrest came after a forensic interview with the now 14-year-old victim, which revealed disturbing allegations.
Investigators say Joseph “repeatedly asked [the victim] to sit on his lap,” later inviting her to sit beside him on a couch under a blanket, during which he allegedly touched her genitals and manipulated her underwear before eventually apologizing and stopping.
According to the Bay County Sheriff’s Office, when confronted by the girl’s father on Tuesday, Joseph confessed to the alleged misconduct.
He was booked into the Washington County, Arkansas, jail at 3:59 p.m. local time on March 18 and is awaiting extradition to Florida to face charges of lewd and lascivious molestation of a child under 12 and lewd behavior by an adult toward a minor.
A family spokesperson told Page Six that the Duggars do not have a statement at this time, leaving a legacy of scrutiny and concern for a family whose public image has been repeatedly overshadowed by allegations of abuse.
