There’s heavy speculation suggesting that the character might be ‘slipping’ and just not as mentally tough that he used to be.

In other words, Maurice might be having a hard time remembering his lines, as some viewers have even noticed that he keeps looking to the teleprompter for reassurance, and even when the cameras are rolling.
Simply put, Sonny just isn’t the same anymore and of course, this has a lot of people concerned. Clearly, many GH fans certainly did have a lot to say about this matter on social media.
Some even commented with, “I have noticed lately that he’s looking off screen at a teleprompter or whatever they use. Sonny has been doing it more and more lately. It takes me out when I see him look off screen to remind him of his lines.”
“I’ve seen people say that he’s phoning it in these days and I’m wondering if this is part of that.”
Another General Hospital fan wrote, “Could be because of the meds for his bipolar. I worked for a man who said the meds make your brain foggy. He’s very forthcoming on his YouTube podcast. Love Maurice, and we share the same birthday.”
And then there was this comment as well: “When someone gets old & starts to slow down, they are quickly shipped off to the rocking chair on the front porch. Maurice Bernard has been a huge presence on this show for a long time.”
