On November 1, a young boy was involved in a shooting death, but it’s his mom, Elaina Gomez-Villeda, who faces murder charges in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
What Happened?
Investigators said that a dispute over loud music escalated into a physical altercation involving 16-year-old Keinerlein Rangel and her mother. Gomez-Villeda told her 10-year-old son to fetch a firearm. Things went downhill when the boy allegedly shot and killed Rangel.
According to the Albuquerque Journal, “Elaina Gomez-Villeda… is charged with an open count of murder, child abuse, contributing to the delinquency of a minor, negligently making a firearm accessible to a minor, battery, and receiving a stolen firearm.”
The Boy Is Not Detained
For now, the boy remains free, but because of his young age, officials discussed whether he should face “potential criminal charges.”
After the gunfire, Gomez-Villeda reportedly sent a text to her husband saying, “I’m probably going to jail right now,” prior to contacting emergency services.
When the police arrived, she didn’t go quietly, and People Magazine said that she stepped out of her residence with the gun in hand and shot at the victim’s father. The outlet aso said, “the Albuquerque woman was charged with first-degree murder.”
The outlet reported that “one of [the] officers fired their weapon towards Gomez-Villeda but did not strike her.” She then allegedly dropped her weapon and surrendered to police.
The Cause Of The Clash
The 16-year-old, Keinerlein Rangel, was with her mom in their home unpacking some boxes. While they did that, they played some music, and Gomez-Villeda objected to that.
It ended up in the deadly confrontation and the teenager died. In the comments section of the People article, one person wrote, “Americans and their fascination with firearms. I don’t understand it. I’ve never seen a real gun in my life.”
True Crime Viewers React
Here are a few more responses from the discussion:
- “This is our world now. Our mental health is at its breaking point. It’s unfortunate that this kind of behavior has become “normal”. Thanks hate and violence on the internet, tv and movies. Our human minds can’t process any of it rationally anymore. No app is going to help this crisis.”
- “So very sad. This is why so many who have them, should NOT own a gun.”
- “The death of a 16 year old, is extremely sad. Since unpacking boxes, maybe moving into a new home with new hope. The adults were to blame and could have avoided the outcome.”
Currently, she’s being held without bail at the Bernalillo County Metropolitan Detention Center. Officials argue that her actions showed a disregard for the safety and lives of others.
