Courtney Clenney built a large OnlyFans following on social media under the name Courtney Tailor, before being arrested following the death of her boyfriend. This week, her legal team approached the prosecution to get a plea deal.
What Happened
It’s been four years since police found her boyfriend, Christian Obumseli, dead from a knife wound inside their Miami apartment.
Clenney never denied that she killed him, and her legal team insisted she acted in self-defense after enduring ongoing domestic abuse.
They even submitted text messages and medical records to support that claim.
What Evidence Supported The Prosecution?
Prosecutors still felt that they had a case, and she was charged with second-degree murder. Part of that decision came after a medical examiner found that the knife wound seemed too deep to come from a thrown knife at the distance she claimed.
Oxygen reported that she claimed she threw a knife from about 10 feet away. And “according to the July 7 defense filing, Clenney told officers that Obumseli had pinned her against a wall by the neck and she was unable to breathe, before he forced her to the ground and allegedly put his hands around her neck.”
Meanwhile, FOX 7 Austin said that “the county medical examiner said in an autopsy report that Obumseli, who worked in cryptocurrency, died from a forceful downward thrust from a blade that went three inches into his chest, piercing a major artery.”
The Arrest
In August 2022, police arrested Clenney in Hawaii while she was receiving care for substance abuse and PTSD, and since then, she has remained in jail without bond.
Her lawyers confirmed a plea agreement on July 31 this year, but it won’t happen instantly, because a judge scheduled a formal hearing for August 10. That’s when a plea deal might be accepted or rejected.
Why The Sudden Change?
Why would someone who claimed self-defense suddenly take a deal right before her trial? To help understand it, host Jesse Webber invited the opinion of trial attorney Mark Geragos on NewsNation.
It wasn’t a long discussion, but the Reasonable Doubt co-host said she likely received an offer “she couldn’t refuse.” He pointed out that her legal team made a practical calculation that “it wasn’t worth the risk of a trial.”
Instead of risking life behind bars, Geragos suggested Courtney Clenney probably chose a sure thing. Geragos guessed she negotiated a reduced charge like “manslaughter” with a set term she “could live with.”
Trials are not always predictable, and juries can often deliver a surprise result. If the plea deal is accepted, the uncertainty of a jury trial comes off the table.
He also noted that judges don’t always automatically approve these arrangements. He said a high “media spotlight” raises the odds of a judge rejecting the agreement, especially if the victim’s family objects.
