Alex Murdaugh Appeal Leaks Suggest A New Trial?

The Alex Murdaugh murder trial shocked members of the affluent Colleton County suburb in South Carolina. The true crime legal proceedings started back in 2021, when his son, Paul, and his wife, Maggie Murdaugh were shot and killed. Convicted, he appealed, and leaks suggest that he might get a shot at another trial. Read on for more details.

The Leaks

It hasn’t been widely reported that a mistrial might be ruled in for Alex Murdaugh, a former lawyer. However, Nancy Grace isn’t afraid to discuss things that haven’t yet played out in court. The news that there might be a “unanimous reversal” of the guilty verdict arrived on YouTube on May 5.

During her rather heated report, Nancy brought in Jennifer Wood, a journalist for FITSNews. While Nancy seemed utterly shocked about a possible “unanimous” decision, Jennifer was a little more cautious.

A Strong Possibility

She told Nancy “I wouldn’t be comfortable predicting that necessarily, but it wouldn’t surprise me.” Nevertheless, she believes there’s some truth to the leak because she also said, “I think it is true. I think we might be looking at a new trial.”

Nobody’s saying how the leaks arrived, but the reporter did say, “That’s what we’ve been hearing. We’ve been on standby for a couple of weeks being told that it was imminent. So, we’re just waiting for the official word from the Supreme Court.”

Another Guest Weighs In

Next, Nancy Grace brought in Eric Bland, an attorney who previously represented the late Mrs. Gloria Satterfield. She was connected to the Alex Murdaugh trial as questions about life insurance crimes arose.

In his opinion, there might not be a unanimous decision. And even if there is one, then the case might not automatically go to retrial. Why not? Well, he said that he believes there’s a real possibility Alex Murdaugh’s murder conviction could be overturned. But, there’s still other ways to think about it.

Not Necessarily A New Trial?

That’s because the South Carolina Supreme Court appeared deeply concerned during oral arguments about whether Alex’s right to a fair trial was compromised. According to Bland, the justices “went so hard” against earlier rulings involving the alleged jury interference claims.

Then ,he also mentioned the admission of testimony about Alex Murdaugh’s financial crimes during the murder trial. However, he stressed that even if the conviction is reversed, it wouldn’t automatically mean a new trial or eventual freedom for Murdaugh.

That’s because the disgraced attorney already serves a lengthy state and federal prison sentence tied to his financial crimes. Notably, Bland said Alex would likely stay behind bars for the rest of his life. As he put it, “Alex will never get a breath of fresh air.”

In the comments section, one follower opined, “What a waste of taxpayers money. As the saying goes…follow the money.”

Here are a few more responses:

  • He should still do life for the financial crimes. We all know what he did.
  • He’s a Narcissistic lawyer. He’s been sitting in prison planning this whole thing.
  • He embezzled money from many many of his clients, even the man in the wheelchair.
  • If there is a second trial, the verdict will be GUILTY again. We will see all the same witnesses. You can’t change the evidence. And don’t forget his financial crimes alone have him in prison for life.
