True crime happens every single day, but the story of a man who allegedly deliberately drove into a family in Queens, killing Jhoanny Gomez-Alvarez, 16, made many people sad. Now, footage from a surveillance video camera arrived that captured the moment prior to the collision.

The Incident

According to multiple outlets, including The Sun US, Jhoanny, her boyfriend, her mom, and a friend of her mother were walking in the wee hours after a night out when an allegedly “drunk driver” started making inappropriate remarks to the teen. It led to “a scuffle.” After that, the 38-year-old suspect jumped in an SUV and apparently deliberately drove at the family.

Reportedly, the mom was hurt, but Johnny Gomez-Alvarez was directly hit, pinned against a post. She died at the scene, there on the sidewalk. The video footage that emerged revealed a terrifying scene that seemed to confirm the accounts by the family and eyewitnesses.

The Video Footage

When surveillance footage was released, CBS News New York shared it on YouTube, and many people felt saddened and horrified by what they saw. The news anchor confirmed that the suspect has been arrested. In the video, the SUV entered an intersection near Roosevelt Avenue.

Then, the true crime story got brutal. The driver “jumped the curb” and steered straight toward the group of pedestrians. The footage showed that it seemed totally deliberate. And, it didn’t help the suspect that they left the scene, committing the crime of hit and run as well. Along the way, the driver crashed into a parked car.

Responses In The Comments

Violence involving vehicles is unfortunately nothing new. Still, people expressed their sadness that a teenager died this time. One commenter wrote, “So sad, My Condolences to the family.”

Here are a few more responses:

  • When folks talk about safety in NYC, nobody brings up the legit danger of pedestrians and cyclists from reckless and criminally negligent drivers. I’m honestly more worried of getting killed from a car crash than being a victim of a crime.
  • after 12am in nyc life’s a gamble, gangs “drunks ” mental illnesses” they all out their…dealers and guns…street thugs…stay home, more safer 2025.
  • This was near me and it scares me to think about it.
  • Crazy people out there, stay home folks.

Why Out So Late?

Some folks who viewed the video wondered why a teenager was out so late. Well, that really is beside the point. In a city with a police force, and in a group together, presumably, one would feel safe around the clock. In this instance though, it wasn’t enough to save Jhoanny Gomez-Alvarez.
