True crime stories are often terrifying, but seldom as bizarre as a U.K. doctor who went over-the-top when he committed insurance fraud. This month, the news arrived that he was jailed for two-and-a-half years. However, some folk wonder if he shouldn’t have been placed inside a facility for those with mental health issues. At the moment, several stories capture the attention of viewers on social media. One of them is just awful, with Jake Haro being accused of killing his seven-month-old son, Emmanuel. He’s believed to have killed his son because of a prior federal abuse conviction for destroying the life of his ten-week-old baby girl.
Another case, not so violent, but still shocking, involves a 76-year-old woman named Kathleen Schuman, a seniors complex resident, who allegedly shot and injured a neighbor with a flare gun. And, of course, who can forget the Gabby Petito case, where her boyfriend killed her and then took his own life.
However, the latest conviction involving insurance fraud by a doctor seems to take the top prize for bizarre.
The Insurance Fraud Case
When NBC New York published the story about Dr. Andrew Neil Hopper, 49, in the UK, they described him as a “vascular surgeon at the Royal Cornwall Hospital.” Apart from charges of possessing pornography, he pleaded guilty to “two counts of fraud by false representation.”
The fraud seemed beyond shocking. The man convicted for his true crime acts actually cut off his own legs! He told people that he had no option but to “amputate them” because of a “sepsis” infection. However, the court case revealed that instead, he’d placed them in “dry ice.”
That bizarre act was allegedly to satisfy some sort of “sexual” fetish. Later, he “fraudulently claimed over £466,000 (about $630,000) in insurance payouts.”
Compounding public disgust, he had actually given interviews about his amputation and was hailed as a hero after his lie about sepsis.
