Sony Developing Labubu Movie After Securing Global Film Rights

Did you know that the Labubu that you so effortlessly spot on your trousers, bags, key chains and other fashionable places has a beautiful story of its own? Sony is reportedly hoping to tap into the viral toy’s storied background for a fantastic movie that might well top the Labubu craze that swept the globe earlier this year.

What We Know About the ‘Labubu’ Movie Sony Wants To Produce

Executive director and co-COO of Pop Mart, Si De, was not kidding when he revealed that he wants Labubus and Pop Mart’s entire toy franchise to rival the Disney brand and become larger-than-life characters.

When we talk about larger-than-life characters, the name Mickey Mouse comes to mind, so it’s not a reach to say that Si De has quite a grand ambition.

“We have learned from Disney for a long time. In fact, Disney’s great value lies in its ability to operate IP (intellectual property) over the long-term, even up to 100 years,” Si De told Reuters in a rare interview.

However, this ambition is more or less progressing in the right direction, with Sony Pictures securing development rights to the toy monsters.

This is not entirely surprising, as big studios have seemingly leaned towards toy and game movie adaptations to bring in the big bucks in recent years.

On the toy side we have the billion dollar box office success Barbie and the game side boasts Sonic the Hedgehog, Super Mario, Minecraft and Tetris.

At the moment, it’s still unclear whether the proposed movie will be live-action or animated, as it’s still in its earliest stage.

The Story Behind Pop Mart’s Viral Labubu Monsters

The plush doll line Labubu turned into a global sensation earlier this year after BLACKPINK’s LISA spotted it.

Since then, celebrities of different backgrounds and orientations have flaunted their own Labubus, with TikTok helping to drive the pop culture effect of these dolls through the roof.

The toys were so popular, famous ‘Taken’ star Liam Neeson went viral for not knowing what a Labubu is.

But what’s the story behind the collectible dolls’ devil smiles and plushy skins? Are they approachable, or…?

Even though Labubus have been around for years, they only managed to ignite a global phenomenon this year. Designed by Hong Kong artist Kasing Lung, the toys first appeared in picture books in 2015.

Labubu was part of Lung’s story series ‘The Monsters,’ which was inspired by Nordic folklore.
