It’s been nearly a week since Prince Harry was introduced as “Harry Wales.” At the time, people wondered if he’d changed his name from Meghan’s preferred “Sussex.” Well, it’s not a new issue on the names he uses. Read on for more information.

The Public Naming

Plenty of people spoke about Harry Wales, and on YouTube’s @danwoottonoutspoken, Dan shared the video of it all. It came at a polo match at the St. Regis World Snow Polo Championship in Aspen, Colorado, last week.

Over the loudspeaker, came the announcement about Prince Harry and his team, who were the runners-up. Repeatedly, they used the “Wales” name. Naturally, that gave lots of royal family followers a bit of a shock. That’s because his wife, Meghan Markle wants to be called Sussex, or Duchess of Sussex.

Meanwhile, at one stage it was thought that Harry wanted to take on the name of his mom, Princess Diana’s family, Spencer.

Lots of folks speculated that Harry asked for his name to be announced as Wales, which Prince William uses. Well, a spokesman apparently claimed that he didn’t. In fact, he’s played polo for a long time. Back in the day, Meghan’s husband was often referred to as Wales. So, perhaps it was simply an announcer’s mistake.

Old Discussions

While many critics rage about it at the moment, the subject of Prince Harry’s Wales name arose on Reddit over a year ago. There, an OP explained more:

Before Charles’s ascension the throne, yes. Even if he was The Duke of Sussex, he was still Prince Henry of Wales…Why isn’t he Prince Henry of Wales anymore? Charles is King. He is now a child of the monarch, not a Royal Duke. He is now The Prince Henry.

In the comments section, at the time, not everyone agreed, and one person opined, “When you get a new title, you no longer use the titles of your parents as your qualifier. So Harry is now Prince Henry, The Duke of Sussex.”

Others don’t really care about any titles. These days, increasingly, folks call for King Charles to strip Harry and Meghan of titles just like Prince Andrew. He’s now known as Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor.

Anyway, the conversation continued, and here are a few other responses:

  • Harry however stopped using the “of Wales” designation in his address once he got a title (Duke of Sussex) in his own right. He still had it – he just didn’t use it.
  • He’s still using it on his polo jersey and is listed as H. Wales in the polo lineups.
  • “Wales” would be completely inappropriate after the queens death since that name now belongs only to William and his family.
