A really nasty instance of medical abuse took place in Florida recently. Hopefully, a nurse will pay for her shocking true crime. Sadly, it involved “an 18-year-old girl” in a vegetative state who needed constant care. Read on for more details.
Allegedly Abusing A Helpless Patient
“Nia Ayers” no longer works as a private nurse and faces charges of alleged abuse. True Crime Stories with Nancy Grace covered the story about “the young woman who was non-verbal” and immobile.
Well, Nancy was spitting angry. After all, she explained that her mom is elderly and in a hospital. So, it makes folks fear those who might not tend to them nicely when the family’s not around.
A Trusted Carer
Due to extreme vulnerability, the teen’s family placed their trust in a nurse for her safety. However, Nia Ayers turned that care into a nightmare. It was only through surveillance footage that the reality of what happened in that house came to light.

The details of the assault are, naturally, quite disturbing. After “noticing…some scratches” on her “daughter’s face,” the mom became “suspicious” because “her child wasn’t able to move.”
Sadly, after installation of a camera, the video allegedly showed Ayers behaving aggressively and violently toward the teen who has cerebral palsy and can’t see much, either. The scary part? She’d been nursing the girl for “over a year.”
Causing Terrible Distress
In fact, the nurse was seen taping the girl’s mouth shut. Ayers also threw a washcloth over the victim’s face. Naturally, the girl couldn’t defend herself, but the video showed her body trembling in obvious distress. Notably, she was on a ventilator to help her breathe. Of course, the mother felt devastated when she saw the recordings.
At one point, as Nancy discussed in her panel coverage, the nurse shook the teen’s head vigorously. As the girl was already very fragile, that treatment didn’t help her. After the footage of the abuse went public, Nia Ayers surrendered herself to the police.

What really freaked out Nancy is that video of the true crime suspect being arrested showed “her smiling. Actually smiling.” So, Nancy hopes she gets “a 20 to life” sentence.
Viewers React
In the comments section of the video coverage, which you can watch below, many people were angry and upset. One of them opined, “Hurting people who are already weak and vulnerable is an extra level of evil.”
Here are a few more responses from the discussion:
- This person is a “non-verbal quadriplegic,” meaning they are the most defenseless human being imaginable.
- As a mother of a nonverbal child, this is one of my worst fears that keeps me up at night.
- She won’t be smiling in prison when they find out what she did!
- Nurse here …She is not a nurse, she is the devil. I can’t even imagine! I’m glad to say 99% of all my co workers are kind, caring, and want to help others.
