The true crime case of Mia O’Brien, a 23-year-old law student from the UK serving 25 years in a Dubai prison for cocaine possession, recently received a new update. Read on to find out more details.

The Update

O’Brien remains imprisoned in Dubai, and at this time, her sentence hasn’t been reviewed. An update from Ladbible this weekend, revealed that her mom tried to start a GoFundMe so her family could visit her in prison. However, the campaign was removed because of certain restrictions on fundraising for specific crimes.

Her mother, who believes in her daughter’s innocence, launched a new fundraiser on the Christian platform GiveSendGo. There. she’s asking for help to cover the cost of visiting her daughter in Dubai and other unexpected expenses.

“We haven’t seen Mia since last October,” Danielle wrote, adding that even small donations would help. The campaign has raised £455 so far. Additionally, there’s a section where people may send in prayers for Mia O’Brien.

The Sentence Was Harsh

The story raises questions about justice, international law, and the risks travelers face when caught up in foreign legal systems. O’Brien studied law at Liverpool University before her life changed last October. Authorities in Dubai said they found 50 grams of cocaine in the room she shared with a friend.

Her trial, which her mother says took place entirely in Arabic, ended with a 25-year sentence and a heavy fine. Effectively, it cut short Mia’s future education and future plans. Notably, her mother insists she never used drugs and has described harsh prison conditions.

Reactions To The Update

Much like many responses when the true crime news first broke, not many people feel sorry for Mia O’Brien. When the Ladbible story arrived on Facebook on Saturday, few sentiments had changed. One critic wrote, “A first year law student knows better lol Fail.”

Clearly, hardly anyone believes that Mia O’Brien didn’t possess the cocaine. Here are a few more reactions:

  • Should be life, lawyer as well..apparently.
  • She’s not a child, knows the difference between right and wrong and also knew the consequences of her actions. No sympathy!
  • I like how sometimes, the trash takes itself out.
  • How ever harsh the penalty seems, you just don’t break the law in Dubai.
  • When traveling overseas check the laws of the country/ countries you are about to visit in relation to Drug laws and things like Ibuprofen and Tylenol these can get you jailed in some countries.

As you can see, there seems to be little sympathy among true crime followers for offenses involving drugs. There’s a definite lack of tolerance as communities feel the effects of the deepening opiate crisis.
