Iryna Zarutska was allegedly randomly killed by Decarlos Brown Jr. True crime followers now hear that he could be step closer to the death penalty following him being charged this week. The passing of North Carolina’s “Iryna’s Law” won’t help his case much, either.

Remembering Irnya

The stabbing and killing of Iryna swirled around social media. The Ukrainian refugee died close to the assassination of Charlie Kirk, so her death was sidelined a bit. However, many people on social media remembered her and posted about that.

Those people might feel relieved to hear that her alleged murderer could face the death penalty. Additionally, he already racked up a criminal record, according to Fox News.

If you don’t know yet, on “Wednesday, the jury charged Brown with violence against a mass transportation system resulting in death, which is a capital offense under federal law.”

Additionally, the “Iryna’s Law” that was signed means it won’t be easy for criminals to get opportunities to evade accountability.

Charges & Legal Penalties

A month ago, those who follow true crime heard that a grand jury returned a murder indictment for Decarlos Brown Jr. However, the latest development gives the prosecution an opportunity to go for the maximum penalty. And, it’s what Attorney General Pam Bondi explained: that after indictment and charging, the prosecution would then decide “whether or not to seek the death penalty.”

Of course, the news that Iryna Zarutska’s death seemed so random and apparently unprovoked, hit hard. The attack on August 22 showed Brown pull out a knife and then stabbing her. And, as the attack came from the back, there wasn’t anything that the young refugee could do to stop it.

Stabbed Three Times

Unfortunately, the stab wounds inflicted with a pocket knife caused her death. Police quickly arrested Brown, and later, the public heard that he’d served time for armed robbery. The attack in Charlotte came after she decided to catch a ride home after work.

The irony is that she fled Ukraine for a better life after Russia started attacking the country. So, folks felt relieved when the news arrived about four weeks ago, that lawmakers seemed determined to stick the suspect with federal charges. Now that happened, his chances of getting off lightly seem less certain.

Reactions From The Public

The people who saw the video of the stabbing called for the death penalty from the beginning. Plus, they raised concerns about safety in North Carolina rail transit. When WCNC talked about improved security, most people in the comments section hoped that the harshest sentence would, in some way, honor Iryna.

At the time, one person commented, “what an absolute FREAK. Death penalty on Federal charges.” Meanwhile, others felt that his prior arrests should have been dealt with more severely.

Here are a few other responses from the discussion area:

  • Who cares what the charges are. It’s a Capital  Punishment case.
  • That young lady deserved a good life, and that judge who let that animal free should be held responsible for his actions as well.
  • Disgraceful, unacceptable, the inept unfit judge and district attorney’s who released this killer must be held accountable, if nothing is done and things don’t change, this dangerous hurtful insanity will just go on!
