Hallmark star Paul Campbell did not exactly bring cheers and good tidings with his latest announcement.
Though he didn’t bring doom and gloom either. According to the star, Hallmark has cancelled ‘The Cases of Mystery Lane,’ and this time it may be for good.
Fans File Petition To Overturn Hallmark Exec’s Decision To Cancel ‘The Cases of Mystery Lane’
It’s like the end of ‘Brooklyn Nine-Nine’ all over again with Paul Campbell’s latest announcement.
There must be something about infusing mystery and detective work with some comedy that’s inherently thrilling to fans. And they’re not ready to let Hallmark smoke a franchise that has proven to hold a masterful commitment to these topics.
“Show may be cancelled, but he’s still on the Case… IYKYK” Campbell shared on October 31 on Instagram, rocking one of several of his character’s funny disguises.
‘The Cases of Mystery Lane’s’ first movie saw Campbell and co-star Aimee Garcia as married couple Alden Case, a chronically unemployed but adorable, quirky guy searching for his purpose, and Birdie Case, a gifted attorney.
Ultimately, Alden is sucked into a real mystery when he signs up for private investigator classes, but the twist is that Birdie’s the only ones with the keys to unlocking the secrets of the great mystery.
The first movie was enough to win fans over and they immediately launched a petition for the network to return with a second installment.
Over 1,300 fans signed the petition, paving the way for Campbell and Garcia’s return in ‘The Cases of Mystery Lane: Death is Listening’ in September 2024.
However, cancellation news has been floating around for a while, though it might have gone pretty much under the radar for some fans.
In May, Hallmark actor Matt Hamilton — who played dim-witted Officer Newton in both movies — first alarmed us of this when he shared on Instagram, “Yes, Paul Campbell and I are building up a nice collection of cancelled shows together. First Turner & Hooch and now this. Not to brag or anything.”
Nevertheless, it took Campbell’s Halloween post to unify the fans into taking action.
“The removal of The Cases of Mystery Lane from Hallmark Channel’s programming has left a void in our mystery-loving hearts. The clever scripts, complete with the show’s signature nerdy puns, offered a unique twist on the classic mystery genre – something that is sorely missing right now,” they wrote in the Change.org petition.
This fight is not only being fielded by fans, but backed by stars such as Campbell, Aimee Garcia and Tyler Hynes.
