Days Of Our Lives Spoilers reveal that Suzanne Rogers, who has played Maggie Kiriakis since 1973, was diagnosed with Stage 2 colon cancer this past spring. Due to her diagnosis, Suzanne was forced to leave the show after 52 years on the Days set. Suzanne talked about her life changing diagnosis with TV Insider.
Rumors Of Suzanne Rogers Retirement
Rumors have been swirling for months that Suzanne was retiring and would be leaving Days after over a half a century.
We all know about those best laid plans and Suzanne probably had no idea that she would be leaving anytime soon. However, it seems that real life seems to have interrupted Rogers reel life with her cancer diagnosis.
Rogers says she sensed that something was off and even though nothing had shown up in routine colonoscopies, her doctor ordered another one. The results were concerning and followed up by an MRI, a PET scan, and a biopsy.
Roger was later informed that she had stage two colon cancer and would need to start treatment. The actress admits that it was all a shock.
Schedule Changes Had To Be Made
“To accommodate the treatment she was prescribed, Rogers took a break from DAYS, completing her final episode in June and starting a six-week course of radiation and chemo, which she underwent five days out of seven, almost immediately after filming her last show as Maggie.”
Suzanne is especially grateful for her friend, Sunie Ostermann and onscreen daughter Linsey Godfrey (Sarah Horton) for their support.
Rogers doesn’t have any biological family in Los Angeles, so these ladies offered support and accompanied her to her doctor appointments as needed. Godfrey is also a cancer survivor, being diagnosed with Stage III Hodgkin Lymphona at 18.
Godfrey underwent 12 rounds of chemotherapy before being declare cancer free. Not to forget her onscreen son-in-law, “Linsey sat there with me and held my hand while I was having it.” The actress said she also shared many meals with both Godfrey and Paul Telfer (Xander). “I knew I could count on them, so it was a lovely experience…. We really feel like a family.”
Other Days Alum Check In
Other Days alum checked in on Rogers during this time as well. “Rogers was grateful to get check-in calls from on-set pals like Mary Beth Evans (Kayla), Stephen Nichols (Steve) and Greg Rikaart (Leo).
The show’s producers, including Executive Producer Ken Corday and Co-Executive Producer Noel Maxam, also stayed in touch and encouraged her to focus on her health, assuring her that the role of Maggie would be waiting for her when she was well enough to return.”
Rogers is now ready to come out of her forced break as she states she is ready to return to work next week.
Maggie’s absence will show up in 2026 and the actress decided to let the fans know what happened. She states she is feeling good and that is happening more and more this days.
Here is to many more years as Maggie and hopes that Suzanne continues to do well.
