Royal Experts And Fans Alike Abuse Princess Kate’s New Tatler Portrait

Have you seen the new portrait of the Princess of Wales released by Tatler? If you have, maybe you’ll understand, and perhaps even feel, the pain felt by some royal experts and fans for the image.

Royal Fans React To New Portrait Of Princess Kate By British-Zambian Artist

Royal fans cannot stomach the new portrait of the Princess of Wales released by Tatler. The image’s inspiration was taken by the Princess of Wales’ appearance at a 2022 state banquet where she wore a floor-length Jenny Packham white dress and a blue sash.

“Sorry, as much as I love that you have the Princess of Wales on the cover, that looks nothing like her,” one fan wrote on X following the release of the magazine’s July cover.

Another echoed, “It’s a no from me, as much as I admire the time and effort expended, the dress, the background, it is not Princess Catherine’s face.”

This is the second time in as many days that royal fans have openly voiced their dislike of a royal portrait. Let’s take King Charles’ recently released official portrait for example, fans were not happy with the clashing red theme, with some calling it “horrific” and “creepy.”

See What the Telegraph’s Chief Art Critic Has To Say About the Princess of Wales’ Portrait

The Princess of Wales’ Tatler portrait, which was neither commisioned nor approved by Kensington Palace, was made by British-Zambian artist Hannah Uzor, who said her main purpose with the portrait was to “capture the soul of the person.”

Well, if she truly captured the soul, we may well admit that Kate Middleton’s soul looks nothing like Kate Middleton. To sum up the Telegraph’s Chief Art Critic Alastair Sooke’s take, the image is “egregiously, intolerably, jaw-hits-the-floor bad.”

Continuing on with his take on the portrait, Sooke complained that “Uzor – who, I read with incredulity, studied recently at the Slade – has somehow transformed one of the most alluring women in the world into a cipher, an automaton, an icon of anti-glamour. She says that her portrait is meant to convey strength and dignity, but the figure she’s painted has a feeble, blow-away presence, drained of charm. Oh dear!”
