Queen Elizabeth made history as the longest serving monarch in British history and the second worldwide, and Queen Camilla is about to make history in her own humble way.
King Charles has decided to, even though it breaks a long-standing royal tradition, have Queen Camilla fill in for him during Royal Maundy service. The role was traditionally reserved for so-called blood royals.
Queen Camilla Set To Distribute Royal Maundy Gifts On Behalf of King Charles
As you probably know, King Charles has started receiving treatment for his cancer. As a result of this, he will not be able to make the trip to Worcester Cathedral to take part in the traditional holiday.
“We are SO excited to announce that we will be welcoming Her Majesty The Queen to the Cathedral on Maundy Thursday (28 March) as we host the Royal Maundy service,” Worcester Cathedral’s official account shared on X. “HM The Queen will be distributing the Royal Maundy gifts on behalf of His Majesty The King at this year’s Service.”
At the moment, Camilla is still on her much-needed break after attending events in quick succession to make up for the King’s absence. Taking the leave on March 4, The Sunday Times reported that she will not be returning until March 11.
Her first event following the short break would be to lead the Royal Family during the Commonwealth Day service — a celebration of the 56 independent member countries across “Africa, Asia, the Caribbean and Americas, the Pacific and Europe.”
The service will be held at Westminster Abbey and will likely see several members of the Royal Family in attendance.
“Although she was not expecting to find herself in the position of leading the family, the Queen is absolutely prepared to do whatever needs to be done for the institution,” a royal source told the Times.
“She has found reserves of energy that even she didn’t think she had,” the source continued. “The estimation of her by those inside the palace has soared as she has put her shoulder to the wheel.”
