Kate Middleton Shares Empathic Story With Mother of Recovering Child At Children’s Hospital

When the Princess is on an engagement, she gets her head in the game. During her latest visit to Evelina London Children’s Hospital, she met and spoke with several parents and staff at the hospital, empathizing on the stress around bringing a young one to the hospital for treatment.

She has served as a patron of the hospital since 2018, and on Tuesday, she visited to officially open the new Children’s Day Surgery Unit.

During the visit, she toured the new wing designed to replicate a child’s journey on their day of surgery, further learning how the new improvements would bring everything a child needs for treatment into one place.

As a mom of three children herself – Prince George, 10, Princess Charlotte, 8, and Prince Louis, 5 – she knew firsthand the importance of the work these carers do and appreciated them for it.

“It’s always nerve-wracking as a parent. I’ve taken mine into hospital for different things. You’re always at least worried, but you’ve got a great team [here],” Princess Kate said, per Hello Magazine.

She also empathized with Miwa Stephenson, the mother of a 4-year-old girl who was recovering from a minor procedure that morning.

“It’s always a worry though for a parent. We have to keep our cool. It’s so hard,” Princess Kate told Miwa before giving her a hug, per the outlet.

Evelina London Children’s Hospital Receptionist Describes Princess Kate As “Down to Earth”

The Princess is widely known for bringing herself to understand what other people are going through and being genuinely interested in her engagements, enough to earn the admiration of many who have met her.

The hospital’s receptionist, Alice Green, was one of the first people to have met the royal at the hospital, and she confessed that it was a lovely experience.

“I was really anxious earlier, but she was really lovely and down to earth,” Green tells PEOPLE. “I thought it might be formal and strict, but it was so comfortable speaking to her. She was asking about our roles — and said that we are the face of Evelina, the first contact people. She wished us Merry Christmas.”

“She is well known for working with children, and it’s really lovely for her to come and speak to people and actually take interest. It is really lovely,” Green adds.

The Children’s Hospital Unit first opened its doors in July, with Kate attending the ribbon-cutting ceremony even then.
