Many Grey’s Anatomy fans were sad that Ellen Pompeo spent so little time as Meredith Grey during season 19. However, Pompeo has teased that her character could return in season 20. As she has played the role ever since season 1 as a series regular, it would make sense for her to return to Seattle.

Ellen Pompeo teases possible return in Grey’s Anatomy season 20

Recently, Ellen Pompeo opened up about the one thing she wouldn’t miss about her role in Grey’s Anatomy. As reported here, she was not impressed with Meredith’s failure in her romantic relationships.

Now, while it looks like Pompeo has left her role as Meredith Grey for good, the actress has teased a possible return in season 20. As far as viewers know, Meredith moved to Boston to research Alzheimer’s with the Catherine Fox Foundation. However, she made a brief return in the season 19 finale, teasing that she is not gone for good.

Speaking with Variety, Pompeo revealed that she could return during season 20 for guest appearances, saying:

It’s a little bit of trickery, because I’m not completely gone. Actually, the storyline is very cool. There’s a lot of real research that’s changing very rapidly about Alzheimer’s disease and about what they believe is the cause of Alzheimer’s disease. It’s pretty controversial. So Meredith’s character left to go to Boston because her daughter needed to go to a special school. I will be making some appearances hopefully next year, if I can find some time.

How could they bring her back?

Fans will recall that Meredith returned for the season 19 finale, after making a breakthrough in her Alzheimer’s research. While there, she got up the courage to tell her latest beau, Nick Marsh (Scott Speedman) that she loves him. She had been unable to bring herself to this point throughout the season, so this was a major change. It also makes it look like her story is far from over and that the door is open if she wants it.

Since the Grey’s Anatomy star wants to return if she can, the scripts may continue to check in on Meredith, even if it’s not the main point of the series. This way, she could be part of the show, even if her presence is minimal. As Meredith continues her Alzheimer’s research, it would make sense for her to visit Grey Sloan Memorial. Let’s hope we get to see Pompeo in the future of the hit medical drama even if for a moment or two.
