B&B was averaging over three million live daily viewers in the United States prior to the production shutdown in March. Many millions more were watching the show when Canada, the regular viewership of other countries, and time-shifted viewings were included. And, this soap is considered one of the most-watched television shows in the world.

CBS announced in May that B&B was renewed through the 2021-2022 season. So, clearly this show’s popularity wasn’t in question. Its ability to garner television ratings means that it generates advertising dollars and makes the show profitable.

B&B Spoilers – Dramatic Impact Of Production Shutdown

As of mid-June, B&B had fallen to an average of one million six hundred and fifteen thousand live daily viewers. Approximately half the number of viewers were watching nearly two months after the last new episode was shown, which does speak to the loyalty of its audience to some degree.

It’s reasonable to believe that a cancellation notice, rather than a two-season renewal, would have been received if such a drop had occurred while new episodes were still running. So, clearly TPTB has faith in B&B to reclaim, or even to build its audience when new shows return, possibly as soon as July, or in august.

Soap operas once ruled the radio airwaves. They did the same on broadcast network television for many decades. But the rise of cable and satellite TV, along with changes in society, began to fragment the audience as early as the 1980s.

It would seem realistic to see a spike in ratings when new episodes return. Whether B&B will be able to meet or surpass the three million live daily viewer mark is hard to predict. But hardcore daytime fans and any who have renewed their interest in recent months now know what the world would be like without new soap. As long as storylines are compelling there should be enough fans to sustain this soap opera through 2022 and possibly, beyond.
