The Young and the Restless (YR) Poll: Is Jack a Blood Abbott, or Not?

The Young and the Restless (YR) Poll: Is Jack a Blood Abbott, or Not?Jack Whoever (Peter Bergman) on ‘The Young and the Restless’. That doesn’t write, read, or sound right. But Jack Abbott does.

The current storyline shocker that may have stripped Bergman’s character of his family legacy continues to generate controversy. Devoted soap opera fans want to believe that Jack is John’s (Jerry Douglas) son for reasons that go beyond current scripts. Believability is in question at this point.

If John was not Jack’s father than a great deal of this legacy character’s history will need to be reimagined and presented to the audience. That scenario wouldn’t go down well.

Soap opera fans spot thin storylines when they see them due to their advanced degrees in authenticity. The willing suspension of disbelief devotees of this genre voluntarily accept comes with a caveat; any changes must sync with known history to be fully digested.

So Jack had a DNA test conducted. But the result he learned didn’t necessarily remove him from the Abbott bloodline, it could have cut Billy (Jason Thompson) out instead.

What’s needed at this point is the use of John’s DNA sample. It wouldn’t be unreasonable to write that some physical part of the Abbott patriarch was preserved when he died, for example just one hair that remained on a brush he used. Exhuming his body years after his passing also wouldn’t be unrealistic, assuming that a portion of his bones could be used for said testing procedure.

Dina (played marvelously by the great Marla Adams) divulged Ashley’s true paternity in the mid-1980’s. It stands to reason that yes, John might then not be Jack’s father. But considering Dina’s Alzheimer’s diagnosis, it’s just as likely that Traci’s father is a heretofore unknown man. As for Billy, well Jill (Jess Walton) was notorious and could easily come to confirm that John isn’t his father. But the question remains, what about Jack?
