The trial of Weatherfield’s former mayor will be off to a dramatic start next week in “Coronation Street.” Sally Metcalf (Sally Dynevor) has been behind bars for a week after being accused of fraud, but she will see some ray of hope to be free.
Paula (Stirling Gallacher) wants Sally to remember what happened on her birthday as Duncan, (Nicholas Gleaves) the corrupt businessman who framed her, takes the stand, making deceitful lies that they were together at a hotel and that it was all Sally’s fault. Kevin (Michael Le Vell) recalls Sally spending that night in the hospital where Jack was admitted.
Sally has a shot at proving she’s innocent once Paula and Sophie (Brooke Vincent) get the CCTV footage. However, it will take days before the pair gets their hands on it. Sophie comes up with a plan and tells Sally to pretend that she is ill to delay the trial and give them time to get the footage.
Sally tells her new cellmate Abi (Sally Carman) that she needs to make herself sick so her trial will be adjourned. Abi hatches a plan and the next day, Sally lands in the hospital. Paula is taken aback when she learns what Sophie asked her mom to do.
Meanwhile, Duncan takes the stand and tries to convince everyone in the court that he is an innocent victim. He tells the court that he loved Sally and she took advantage of that by coercing him to defraud the council.
Unable to believe what her sister is willing to do to stop the case, Gina decides to meet with Duncan and ask him more questions. Instead of discovering things that will help her sister, Duncan is too clever and tells Gina lies about Sally, which she is also so eager to believe. Gina goes home and tells Tim and Sophie that she’ll be a character witness for Sally. What will Gina tell the court after hearing all of Duncan’s lies? Will she help in the dismissal of Sally’s case or will she play a role in her conviction?
