Coronation Street’s Claire King Speaks Out About Controversial Euthanasia Comments

Coronation Street's Claire King Speaks Out About Controversial Euthanasia CommentsWhen former Coronation Street star Claire King (ex Erica Holroyd) was asked a question recently about euthanasia, her response came as a shock to many. Not expecting the reaction she got from fans, Claire took the time this week to clear up a few things about her controversial comments.

The 54-year old former star of Emmerdale and Bad Girls had no intention of causing a stir when she aired her opinion of assisted suicide, and says that her views were solicited quite unexpectedly. Claire stated that she was in the midst of talking about an entirely different topic when the subject came up during a June interview with The Sunday Mirror.

“I can understand why people choose assisted dying – and it’s getting to the point where I would consider it myself,” the actress acknowledged at the time. She went on to say that she worries about being older and becoming a burden for her loved ones. Claire was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis in the recent past.

Claire has no children and she and her brother care for their disabled parents. Her parents, both of whom are 77, have experienced chronic illnesses for many decades. During the earlier interview Claire said that neither she nor her brother have ever considered caring for their parents as a burden.

Looking to clarify her previous hot-button comments on an episode of Loose Women, the talented actress explained, “I have cared for my parents most of my life. I never saw it as caring. They’ve both been ill so you just get on with it.”

During her time on-air, Claire also acknowledged that she realizes that she upset many members of the public with her views on euthanasia and now wanted people to be able to “hear her side,” of the matter.

The veteran actress went on to say she was talking about an entirely different topic when the journalist brought up assisted suicide, to which she replied, “yeah I guess, I’m pro euthanasia.”
