Did Corrie writers forget that they had one of the most important storylines of the show? Viewers were outraged. Guilty of rape, yes, but what justice did this give poor Bethany Platt who found out that her fiance was planning to sell her to men abroad? What happened, Coronation Street?

There was also the case of Bethany being sketched by a courtroom artist. This, under UK law, is illegal as it infringes on the right to anonimity. Viewers picked this up and rang up OFCOM – the UK’s television complaint line – to express their outrage at this miscarriage of justice. Coronation Street was quick to release a statement:

“We accept this wasn’t a true representation of court procedure and we apologise for including it. The artist was solely used to illustrate the passing of time, and we devoted multiple scenes to the fact that Bethany’s anonymity is a priority for the court. We repeatedly focused on details regarding screens and video links, and support for victims throughout the court process, which we hope would encourage anyone watching to recognise the fact they would be in a safe place when giving evidence.“

Thanks for that, but what the hell happened to the human trafficking? Like seriously, where did it go? Are you happy with the verdict? I know I’m not. Why don’t you take part in our poll below and let your voice be heard?
