Reverse Rumspringa
Many people know that Rumspringa is the period of time when Amish youth are allowed to go out into the world to decide if they wants to remain Amish or try their luck in the English world.
However, Suddenly Amish allows “English” youth a chance to join the Amish. The show premiere on January 13 at 10 p.m. And will feature six young people who want to take a chance at becoming Amish. Can they make the conversion to this much simpler life?
Becoming Amish candidates are hosted by Amish leaders who have offered to guide them through this radical transition. Why would the Amish leaders invite outsiders into their communities?
Bishop Vernon, may have an unorthodox approach, but Amish communities are so small compared to others that they are running out of single people who are not related.
Amish Hosts Working With Bishop Vernon
James is a rebel without a cause who has been shunned by his community, but he wants to get back into the good graces of his community.
James tries to mentor others who want to get into the community as he wrestles with temptations, tradition, and redemption. Can James show the newcomers what NOT to do as a community member?
Emma is James’ cousin who has been out of the Amish life and has recently returned. Emma will offer support to the possible converts while she is working through her own difficult relationships and boundaries.
Will Emma turn out to be a good influence for those who want to become Amish have have no idea how to handle these relationships?
Allen is an older mentor to the participants in the group of people. Allen and his wife, Sarah, have through their own struggles and adopting four children has given them the experience to be patient and understanding with the participants. Could Allen and Sarah’s adoptive children help these converts to make the transition easier?
Sarah is a mother of four who acts as a mentor right alongside her husband. Sarah can offer the women a unique perspective because she is a female.
These young women are going to need a mother figure to talk to and confide in. Will Sarah take over as the mothers these converts have left behind?
Difficulties That Plague The Outsiders
It is difficult for the Amish to go out into the real world and many want to return home but end up being shunned for leaving. However, coming into the Amish seems to be much different including letting go of the perks of the English life.
Are these recruits ready to move away from the temptations of the outside world and learn to live this much simpler life?
