Ohio House Of Horrors: Legal Updates & Competency Evaluations

Christina Siders is the grandmother in the Ohio House of Horrors case, and we reported that she’s trying to get released from custody. However, there are some other updates coming as Vinton County filings are arriving. Read on for more details.

A Short Recap

Officers went to the home of the Siders family to serve a warrant. That led to the discovery of 16 children living in appalling conditions. ABC News cited the sheriff as saying the home was “not fit for livestock.”

All four adults in the family were arrested. The parents of the children are Elizabeth and Gary Siders Jr., and they all lived with the grandparents Gary Siders Sr. and Christina “Lynn” Siders. Later, they pleaded not guilty to endangering children.

The children were removed and placed in care, and the adults remained behind bars. An update from The Mirror reported that the grandfather Gary Siders Sr. “was taken to hospital earlier this month after suffering a fall while being transferred from jail to a preliminary court hearing.”

Findings by medical professionals established that he has a “serious medical condition that requires specialized care in a hospital outside this area.”

Updates From Journalist Conlin

On the weekend, Lauren Conlin gave some Ohio House of Horrors updates noting that all four of them were arrested after the son became involved in a misdemeanor charge. The update arrived on the Los Angeles Studios’ crime podcast on YouTube.

In the court documents, Christina’s attorney pushed back against the state’s criminal allegations. The defense team claims “there is no evidence that has been provided which would support the finding that defendant committed any acts of abuse.”

Her defense argues that Christina used no weapons, committed no acts of violence, and was never accused of causing serious physical harm. Instead, her filing claims she was the “sole functional adult” holding the household together.

Christina Siders paid the rent, supplied utilities, and carried the costs of living expenses. She also acted as a caregiver for her husband, Gary Sr.

As Conlin summarized from the filing, Christina’s stance is that she helped the family. Conlin cited the document, saying: “All I am basically guilty of is allowing my grandchildren and my daughter-in-law and my son to stay at our home.”

Competency Evaluations

Moving on to discuss the competency evaluations, Lauren Conlin took note that two of the adults have officially been granted that: Christina Siders and her son, Gary Siders Jr.

Conlin observed: “Gary Siders Jr. was asking for a competency evaluation that was granted by the judge… and Christina Lynn Siders, his mother, has also requested through her lawyers a competency evaluation and that has been granted. So as of right now, Elizabeth Siders is the only member of the family that has not been ordered to be evaluated.”

Gary Jr.’s legal team fought to have his request and mental health evaluation sealed. The judge ruled that his private psychiatric records will remain confidential. But the docket request itself stays public.

The Bond Reduction

Christina’s attorney continues to push for a reduced bond or release on recognizance, pointing out that she has lived in Ohio long-term, does not have a prior criminal record, and given her level of poverty, would find it difficult to flee the state.

There is a motion to lower bond, but even if it’s reduced from $300,000 bail to $100,000, she might not be able to pay. And even if she did raise the funds, it’s not clear where she might live. At the moment, it doesn’t seem that extended family members have offered Christina shelter.

Is Grandmother Siders Liable?

Per LA Magazine, Christina Siders wants to leave jail because she didn’t do anything to personally harm the children. “Her attorney contends she is not accused…of using violence or possessing weapons.”

The defense argues that all she did was allow “her son, daughter-in-law and grandchildren to live in her home.”

During the podcast, Conlin talked about how it seemed that Gary Jr. seemed healthier than the frail senior family members. She suggested the case seems to have happened because of “impoverishment and cognitive impairment, rather than being malicious.”

She said, “I just don’t think that this case here is like, ‘Oh, they were neglecting the kids to keep more for themselves’…if 80% of them are not mentally competent, I just have questions.”

Current Status

The case will be decided by a grand jury, and Conlin said it may have already started. She also reminded viewers that all four adults opted to waive their preliminary hearings.

As Conlin noted regarding the court’s options: “I cannot imagine that they separate this trial. I think all four defendants will be tried together because they are being charged with the same thing… I just don’t think Vinton County would be able to do that anyway for resources, witnesses, experts, all of that stuff.”

For now, Christina Siders remains behind bars while awaiting a final ruling on her bond modification request, while the 16 children remain in safe external care.
